I have the Piriform Suite Pro.
Running W7-64 with SSD boot.
I accidentally deleted a complete directory with thirty years of personal writings as I was in the process of preparing a consolidated backup. I do not know what I did, but the directory disappeared.
Recuva sees the files, says they are excellent and have size, but after transfer to a different drive, none - doc, txt, pdf, etc. are readable. If I look at them in notepad++ they are in oriental characters, hex, and other various unknown, even trying different formats.
No end to variation of Previews

I have also tried Recuva on some older files from a HD and get the same result.
I have also tried FreeRecovery on some older files and have found a few that are readable, but there are over a thousand so to check each one will be worth it but not before I know what is going on. At least it gives a quick view if it is readable.
If I look at preview, there is info there but not enough to understand status.
Fortunately I had the previous smaller SSD to reboot from and now have the larger SSD disconnected and will reconnect as an USB drive upon trial solutions that will not overwrite as a boot drive. I lost a few more unrecoverable before I did that.
I have a feeling that the problem may be CCleaner having done some deep erase without my knowing.
There are two things I really do not understand.
1. Why Recuva says there is size and excellence and it cannot do anything.
2. If CCleaner was the problem, why are there some files that are not a problem.
Any thoughts? TIA
michael
