Recent Documents disappearing

I am a CCleaner Free user. Under the Windows tab, under Windows Explorer, I have unchecked the box labeled Recent Documents.

Unfortunately, when I run CCleaner, the recent document lists in Excel and Word are erased. Does anyone have any thoughts on this issue?

Under Applications have you tried unticking Word/Office?

back when I was using Office 2003 or 2007, unticking that item still was causing CC to clean more Office items than I liked, so I also had to put %UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Office\Recent\ as an EXCLUDE and since then CC doesn't interfere with Office.

even though I'm now using 2016, i've just left it there as I know it works.
