Problem with HostsMan Beta 5

I just upgraded to HostsMan Beta 5, but now every time I try to start the program, I get the error "hm.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program." Every version of HostsMan has worked, including the recent Beta 4. Now, I can't even find a download for Beta 4 to go back to that! This is very frustrating. I also tried to register as a member on abelhadigital.com to post this problem there, and I get a forum error every single time. What's going on here? YoKenny?

This is on Windows 2000 SP4.

EDIT: I just installed Beta 4 from MajorGeeks and it works fine. It's only Beta 5 that gives me that error.

Its best to post your situation over at HostsMan forum as the program's author probably does not visit here:

My guess is that since Windows 2000 SP4 is no longer a supported operating system by Microsoft that future enhancements to HostsMan and its companion proxy server HostsServer require XP or Vista.

What's new since 3.2.68 Beta4?

- changed: multi-threading library improved;

- changed: internal DNS resolver improved;

- removed: "Mike's Ad Blocking Hosts" source;

- fixed: some import options do not work;

- fixed: minor bugs.

Wow! I just checked and I'm running beta4 :blink:

That's what I've been trying to do all day. Every time I fill out the forms and click "complete registration", I get this message: The error returned was: Sorry, you are not permitted to use this board . Can you get in touch with a mod or admin there? Maybe the registration system is broken? I am filling out all fields of the registration form properly, yet the it fails each and every time.

By the way, Windows 2000 IS supported by Microsoft. It may be in it's "extended" support phase, but it still receives monthly patches, and will continue to do so until July of 2010.

Extended Support Period until 13 July 2010. Security updates and security-related hotfixes will be provided free of cost. Paid support is still available.

Does it work with XP?

I did not know that.

I'm running beta5 now.

Does it work with XP?

I haven't had a chance to try registering on XP yet. Every other site works on my Win2k machine, that's why I thought the problem was on abelhadigital's side.

You're probably right that the reason I am experiencing problems with Beta 5 is because I'm running 2000. However, I think that application developers should allow their apps to work with it since it is still fully supported. Also, every version of HostsMan has worked with 2000 right up until Beta 5...that includes the Beta 4 which I am running now. Most likely, the problem is minor and can be corrected by the author. HostsMan/HostsServer are such quality, useful apps, I'd hate to not be able to use the latest version!

Does it work with XP?

Kenny,

I just tried it on my XP SP3 machine with both IE7 and Firefox 3.01. I got the exact same log-in error. Could you please PM the site admin and let him know the forum registration system is broken? I'd like to try and get this resolved. Beta 5 is working on the XP system too, but it only occurs on Windows 2000.

I just opened a new topic for you:
