Saluti a tutti

Lucio

Hi Lucio,

It happens the same to me in my XP machine and I'm pretty sure the culprit is Defraggler v1.17.172. For a couple of days I've tried what I've read on internet but no luck so far. Also when right-clicking on the empty desktop the context menu doesn't appear.

Has anybody come across a solution?

This is indeed very strange but I'm not entirely sure if is possible to point the finger directly at Defraggler.

If icons had been deleted from the desktop this would have happened instantaneous and not after a reboot of Windows.

Honestly I can't say the icons dissappeared when Deffragler was running. I check the option to shutt the computer off when the defrag process finished overnight, so I just noticed the missing icons next morning when switched my PC on.

If you want to know more symtoms:

- icons gonne from desktop but actually still accessible in the folder C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Desktop

- right click on the desktop doesn't work (no pop-up menu)

- Task bar working fine (I mention this because there seems to be a Windows bug that causes the Desktop icons and task bar to dissappear)

- XP with all Service Packs and updates installed

- antivirus software running and updated

- I tried expanding the EXPLORER.EX_ file included in the Windows XP CD and copying it to C:\WINDOWS folder but the problem is not solved

... Jesus ...

Hiding and unhiding desktop icons is a feature of Windows Explorer which can be access via the right click menu on the desktop.

Since you're unable to access this pop-up menu then I can only assume something has gone wrong with the registry settings for Explorer.

The solution for this would be to either to use the System Restore or patch the system registry with the correct keys.

For patching simply login as another user by enabling guest or creating a new user account.

Run regedit.exe and navigate to the following:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

export this to a registry file e.g. c:\fix.reg

logout and login to your problem account then import registry keys with regedit or double click on c:\fix.reg

To make Explorer accept the new keys use Windows Task Manger, kill explorer.exe and run explorer.exe

Thanks redhawk for your help, but I forgot to mention that the desktop's misbehaviour applies to all user accounts, so I can't try your solution.

I'm thinking of formatting the PC soon.

Best regards,
