Prefetch

Hello all.

Great product.

Only problem I have using Windows XP Professional SP3 with a dual core 5200/2gigs ram and a 3400 series ati video card (if all of that helps) is that it doesnt clean the Prefetch file in C:\windows folder even though I have entered it to be cleaned.

Any ideas.

Thanks./Peter.

Does the CC Analysis stage report that it will clean the actual file where the prefetch stuff is, or should I say where you are looking?

It's generally agreed that deleting prefetch entries is of no advantage and can reduce performance, so it's no great worry. But CC does clean mine if I ask it to.

PS. Well, that's a turnup. I've just looked in my prefetch folder and it has about 30 entries. Yet analysing the prefetch in CC shows nothing to be removed. (I don't have this option ticked, as you might have guessed.) So yes, prefetch isn't being cleaned!

PPS Some bright spark will probably remind us that this useless option was removed a few releases ago.

PPPS It does say 'Old' prefetch data. It probably has to be over a certain age, like me. I'm too tired to look in the manuals. Where's the bright spark when you need him?

Welcome Peter

This has been discussed at great length before.

Now is a good time to learn the power of Search in the upper right next to Help.

It is not quite as comprehensive as Google search but it works great.

Thank you Augeas for your reply. I thought I was missing something but seems it is simply the software not doing the job it lists it will do. Perhaps a change in wording or a deletion of this function would be in order.

As for YoKennys' reply...WOW...all of that to say nothing.

I realize this "has" been discussed before as I did read up prior to my renewing the question. I was hoping for something new in way of answer.

So please, unless you have something positive to add to someone posing a question, stay out of my thread.

Thank you.

Hi peter.

From the CCleaner Beginners Guide:

Old Prefetch Data

In Windows XP a Prefetch file is generated each time an application is run. This helps Windows optimize the application the next time it is executed. Unfortunately these files are not deleted when the applications are removed. This option removes these files for programs that haven't been accessed in 14 days. (This process is very safe and Windows will recreate the files as necessary.)

From the new CCleaner Documentation:

Old Prefetch Data - (XP only) To run quickly, Windows uses prefetch files to store information about programs that you frequently use. The Cleaner deletes old prefetch data for programs that no longer exist or haven't been used in a long time.

Link to the new Piriform Guides is in my signature.

hi there!

sorry for bumping this thread, but i also have some problems with the prefetch folder under winxp.

instead of the built-in option, i want to use the winapp2.ini with the following code:

for example:

[Prefetch]LangSecRef=3029Detect=HKLM\Default=falseFileKey1=C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch|*tmp*

as you can see, analysis works, but ...

... the cleaning does not.

for testing purpose

CCleaner (v2.16.830) has no problem with deleting other file types from the prefetch folder, only with .pf files.

any ideas?
