PC Won't Shut Down

My PC running Windows XP SP2 won't shut down or restart, I've tryed from the start menu and from the shut down option in Task Manager to no avail. I've even tryed 3rd party shut down managers which don't work either. I've tryed loads of PC maintenance tools, registry cleaners etc but they haven't fixed the problem. But my PC still shuts down when running in safe mode, just not in normal mode. This problem has been going on for 3 weeks now and i've no idea how to fix it.

Heres a HiJackThis log of my current running processes:

You definitely have a lot of files running on your computer. You can use MsConfig to disable those that you don't need actively running and also remove them from Start > Programs > Startup folder.

The system is clean of any malware that I can see.

Try closing down a lot of applications. Also go to MSConfig and uncheck all in Startup, then see if the system still doesn't shutdown, etc.

Yeh you must be a tweaker. Use MSCONFIG and disable everything on the Startup tab one by one until successful. It's going to take you quite a while. It's gotta be one of those junk programs you're running. FreeRAM XP Pro? wtf. Popupwasher? wtf. :P

That's awesome (that's sarcasm) how F-Secure comes with Backweb, I mean wtf.

You only need a popup blocker when your surfing the web, if your getting it in any other place, you have adware installed.

And, most browsers have built in popup blocking support, (Firefox, and if you have winxp sp2... internet explorer.)

Hey, rmbr what I just stated?I'm a skimmer to XD.

I disabled everything in Startup and Services in msconfig, now it shuts down ok but my PC now only displays the 'windows classic' theme on my desktop with no option to use the windows xp theme. plus PC is now totaly broken. time to format me thinks.

Reformat and go the open source way, for open source and freeware is 1337.

Lol :-)

But only this time I aint gonna install crap. :P

But only this time I aint gonna install crap. :P

Heh, my computer runs just fine,(with open source mostly) but get AVG or Avast! this time k?

Yer I have Avast and ZoneAlarm on my other PC so this time I'll use them on this PC too.

Norton is a resource hog I know that, F-Secure was a trial.

I had a "similiar problem" approximately 90% of the time on my Dell Dimension 8300 system running WinXP Pro. My shutdown/restart problem would happen immediately after running a full antivirus scan using eTrust EZ Antivirus, or after the system was on a long period of time. I was able to turn off the system by holding the power button for about 6 to 8 seconds however that isn't necessarily a good thing since that may damage or corrupt files since it may be considered a bad shutdown.

When I updated the system BIOS it completely disappeared.

A bit late now, but popupwasher sounds a bit dodgy http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/P...r.exe-4117.html

I've also heard that pcAnywhere can cause problems, pcAnywhere Install Details

Reformat and go the open source way... that always pisses people off :)

How come I got an email notification on saturday morning of a new reply being added to this old post by 'Caleb' but this so called new reply is not here anymore. Whats going on?

Well a new member dug up this old thread. I don't guess he read the date and since this was from over a year ago I deleted the posts. I didn't even think you came to the forum anymore. :D(haven't noticed you around)

Anyway glad to you see you do. :P
