Past Items in Taskbar

Is there some way I can clean out the Past Items in the Taskbar using CCleaner? I know the way to clean it through the registry but I am hoping there is someway I can add it to my cleaning with CCleaner. Pease, hopefully if not now in a future version?

If you're talking about the Customize Notifications icons that's been in CCleaner for a long time, it's in CCleaner here:

Advanced > Tray Notifications Cache

Note that you have to have Task Manager running to end task Explorer.exe, then to restart it. You should then restart Windows.

A much easier way is to download 53. Remove Past Items From Notification Area from http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm because it will automatically end task Explorer.exe and restart it. You should then restart Windows.

Thanks a bunch! I knew about the tray notification in CC but didn't want to go through the hassle., this worked great.

Is there a way to do this with Vista? I am using XP S2, but my friend has been trying to find a way to do it with her Vista Home.

I don't use Vista so I don't know if there is.

These two fix/tweak sites don't have anything Vista related as of yet either:

Yes there is a way but for some reason not with CCleaner (i hope it will be added soon for Vista), andyway the to do it in Vista is to open regedit and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify and delete the folowing entries in the right pane IconStreams and PastIconStreams, close regedit and start Task Manager and click on the Processes tab, now find and highlight explorer.exe and click End Process, now click File > New Task {Run...), type explorer in the Open field and click OK, now restart your system.

In regedit for ease of use i have added HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify to the Favorites tab so i don't have to got looking about in the registry every time i want to delete past icons in the notification area of the taskbar.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, it worked for her.

I have used these steps with both XP and Vista which work until I reboot computer and all is reset back to previous defaults. Also, with Vista there is not the - Advanced > Tray Notifications Cache (yes it's listed on my XP system).

After you delete the registry entries you "MUST" stop and then restart the explorer.exe process before you restart your computer for this to work.

This is indeed correct, in Vista there is no option listed for Advanced > Tray Notifications Cache but in XP this option is available, i hope this option gets added/fixed, whatever the case may be.

I too having a bit of hard luck removing the Past items.

I first tried Advanced > Tray Notifications Cache

Re-booted, but the items still there.

Then tried http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm - download 53. Remove Past Items From Notification Area . But I got an error msg something about access denied (odd this is my PC).

As has already been mentioned, after running CCleaner with that option ticked you must restart explorer (not the computer). So run CCleaner then press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to bring up the task manager, click the processes tab, find and right click the 'explorer.exe' entry and 'End process'. All your open windows will disappear, then in the task manager click 'File', select 'New task (Run...)'. In the new task window type 'explorer.exe' and press enter. Your tray notifications cache should now be cleaned ;)

Ahhh.

Thanks-

Any news on when the Trayicon cache cleaning feature will be

available in Vista, too ?
