Hi all
I need to password-protect some folders of mine.
Can any recommend decent programs or is the best way to compress it and then use the password option?

It has some good links but the very last one I posted dosent compress the folders and the first link I posted does. I have since then used both of those programs and they both were awesomely.
Dont post in the topic just read it since its very old.
Thanks for the all the links.
At the end of the day I eventually chose AxCrypt.
I simply needed it for one folder, so wasn't too keen on any trial versions.
rridgely>> thanks for the old link. My apologies for actually not doing search.
Has anybody tried this one? Win-Guard Pro 2005

I found it searching for an answer to a similar query a while back. I've never tried it, but it sounds promising.

I've been using the Folder Access program recommended at the end of that thread since it was recommended and it works a treat. I only wanted to lock a folder so didn't see the point in getting an encryption program that did more than I needed. Also I only wanted to lock one folder too so the trial element (only four folders lockable) was irrelevent. Highly recommended.
I tried that one before I told you to get it.
The one I didnt try was wincry but I have since tried it and it works very well.
Folder access is great too but I dont lock my pc up.
I think if you use NTFS as your filesystem, there are built-in features in Windows/NTFS to use.
I download truecrypt last week i have not yet extensively used it yet but so far its very good.
Some features from the official site.
# Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk.
# Encrypts an entire hard disk partition or a device, such as USB flash drive.
# Encryption is automatic, real-time (on-the-fly) and transparent.
# Provides two levels of plausible deniability, in case an adversary forces you to reveal the password:
1) Hidden volume (steganography ? more information may be found here).
2) No TrueCrypt volume can be identified (volumes cannot be distinguished from random data).
# Encryption algorithms: AES-256, Blowfish (448-bit key), CAST5, Serpent, Triple DES, and Twofish.
Mode of operation: LRW (CBC supported as legacy).
# Based on Encryption for the Masses (E4M) 2.02a, conceived in 1997.
Has anyone tried the DriveCrypt?
I hear a lot about this software, but I don?t know it yet.
Personally, I would use TrueCrypt.
anyone know why XP doesnt have it but on 95 and 98, it does?
im looking for something that works over a network without having to install any programs.
Does anyone know if one of these programs can be loaded onto a memory stick? I use a couple of these sticks, and I have information on them that I wouldn't want anyone to see.
I know that some of the newer memory sticks provide for password protection, but I just thought that if one of these programs could be loaded onto the stick, it would protect information.
Thanks.

I'm glad that was what you wanted.
Also, thank you very much for the compliment.

Have you tried Folder Lockbox? It's beta, but it seems to work well.

That is right Glen, an article here discribes how to use the Cipher.exe tool with the EFS system in the windows professional and 2000
