Browser battle heats up
Oslo - Norwegian group Opera Software said on Tuesday that it would offer its web browser Opera free and without advertising banners, in a bid to outdo rival Firefox and become the world's second most used browser.
"We want to become the second-biggest browser. The number one is a little inaccessible," Opera Software chief executive Jon von Tetzchner said in a reference to Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
A lighter version of Opera has until now been available for free download on the internet, but with ad banners.
"We've always stood up well in comparison with our competitors in technical tests but users disliked that they had to pay $39 and that we had ads. We decided to eliminate these obstacles in order to attract users," von Tetzchner said.
"This decision is not aimed at Firefox. It's aimed at increasing our market share," he added.
He said Opera had between 10 million and 15 million active users in the world, or "between 1% and 2% of internet users". By comparison, Firefox has just over 5%, he said.
"Our aim is to rise to their level and surpass them," he said.
A study published in July by the company NetApplications, which specialises in internet user statistics, said Firefox had an 8.71% share of the world market in June.
Opera's web browser enables users to surf the internet with voice commands and reduce the risks of identity fraud and other internet and e-mail fraud.
i has been a big fan of Opera...glad they have decided to remove those ugly banners...firefox vs opera...let the battle begins...
Firefox is more W3C compliant and functional than Opera. Opera has numerous sites where things break and such, yet the sites are up to W3C standards.
Avant Browser for me. i've used Opera, Firefox, and other browsers. i only like Avant Browser out of all of em.
few weeks back... they gave out free registration key... now they make it free...
Yeah, and I won't complain one bit because when they were giving it away free a few weeks ago it allowed me to go from my licensed 7.x version to a newer version that's much better.
Now that they've made it free without ad's they'll surely get more users, especially those like me who can't use Firefox due to it crashing on my system.

I'm wondering if Mozilla still has problems with ATI display cards like the old 4.x versions of Netscape, although I use Mozilla Suite without any problems, and it has only crashed once in two years.

I've got an ATI X600XT that's 128MB RAM with PCI-E. No Firefox - ATI linked problems. The few times I've made Firefox crash was my fault.

I just downloaded Opera...thought why not give it a chance.
The first annoying thing that stands out is that preferences can't be saved!
Not exactly the best start...
EDIT: Some links that I click on become dead and I have to reload page to get it to work. Also I can't seem to find a status bar at the bottom of the page indicating if a page has fully loaded etc.
Did I mention the preferences issue?

Opera is a wonderful browser, it is hard to figure out at first. But once you get past that, it's smooth sailing on the information super highway (lol).
I use Firefox and Opera. But for my main browser is Firefox because of the user ability it has bulit in.
one thing i dont really like opera is that it doesnt support pdf... you need to download the pdf file...

Not at all. You only need to do a backup if you've changed settings and have added or removed bookmarks.
Your bookmarks are going to be the most important thing to backup and Opera will allow you to create a backup of your bookmarks to another location by clicking: File->Import and export->Export Opera bookmarks
By the way your bookmarks are located at:
Opera\profile\opera6.adr
Opera automatically makes a backup of your bookmarks to the file:
Opera\profile\opera6.adr.bak
What I do is create a zip archive of the files I mentioned in my previous post about saving the settings. I store the full folder information in the zip archive so that I can simply unzip to C:\ and all the files will unzip to the correct folder location.
