Opera download folder bug

I'm having this issue with Opera 10.01 and CCleaner 3.05.1408 on a machine running Windows 7 Professional.

The default download folder in Opera for me is this: -

C:\Users\Steve\Downloads

If I change it to this........

C:\Users\Steve\Desktop

.....then when I try and save a file, it'll save to the desktop, which is how it's supposed to work.

However, if I then run the latest version of CCleaner (all boxes are ticked for Opera cleaning apart from "Saved passwords"), then even though in Opera's preferences the download folder is still set as the desktop, when I actually try and download something, it wants to save it in C:\Users\Steve\Downloads again. It has to be CCleaner that is causing this issue, because it's reproducible every time. To fix it, I have to go into Opera's preferences and set the default download folder to something else, then back to the desktop again, and it'll work until the next time I run CCleaner.

Hi djsigma, and welcome to the forum.

Another user brought up this very same issue earlier in the week, and I'm sure the devs will be looking at it as they check through all forum topics.

Maybe revert to a previous version until the issue is sorted.

Thanks for the welcome and response, Dennis. :)

I did look to see if anyone had already mentioned it, but obviously I couldn't have looked that hard! lol. I've taken your advice and I'm back on version 3.04.1389 for now.

In the new version it now says: -

Added Opera cleaning for saved/opened directories paths.

But there's no way to disable this. Is the option to disable it going to be available in a future version, because I can't really see why anyone would want to have their default download directory changed every time they run CCleaner.

I've been trying to gradually eliminate one by one Opera files deleted by CCleaner in an effort to isolate and for now, "exclude", the relevant file being "cleaned", and in the process I discovered something I've never even noticed before.

For me Opera has always returned to the "last used" download location until a run of CCleaner sets that to the "My Documents" folder, which is the problem we're talking about.

However, in reality CCleaner never changes the user defined download folder. It remains the same after running the latest CCleaner with everything checked. (Not including "saved passwords" in that statement of course).

It all depends which right click menu item you use to do the saving.

Depending upon what it is you are saving, there are always a couple of save options to choose from, and one of them always saves directly to the download folder, and this is the only save option controlled by that user defined setting.

The green highlighted option always goes to the user defined download folder, and isn't affected by CCleaner. The other two unfortunately are affected by running CCleaner.

Also unfortunately, it isn't always possible to use the "Save to Download Folder" option.

This doesn't change the fact that CCleaner is wiping out the "last used" download location, but just to be accurate and to save looking for a problem which doesn't exist, it isn't wiping out the user defined one.

So if possible, always choose the "Save to Download Folder" option until the other save options are excluded from being cleaned.

Just to illustrate in a different way how this "Save to Download Folder" location never changes, I went through the process of downloading CCleaner. As soon as I clicked "download" and "save", the download window opened to "My Documents":

However, when I selected "cancel" and then right clicked on the download button and chose "Save to Download Folder", it went straight to my chosen location:

Hope that helps. For now.

Hello folks

If you go to applications and deselect 'Internet History' from the Opera submenu, the browser will remember it's download location (v11.10). I would however consider this behaviour to be a bug. Internet Explorer has a check box for 'Last Download Location'. Perhaps this function can be included for Opera? :P

Regards

Thanks for the info, DennisD and Ade.

Is this fixed in the recently released version of CCleaner?

It most certainly is ...

:)

Thanks Dennis.

I wish I'd read the changelog first though. I ran it and it deleted a FileZilla file that stores all the login info for certain servers I have access to. I wish this stuff wasn't checked by default, especially when it's added to a new version. Thankfully, the "previous versions" feature of Windows 7 allowed me to restore that file from a restore point.

Anyway, thanks again for all the help with the Opera issue!

You're more than welcome, and I'm pleased you managed to fix your FileZilla issue.

It's a good point about new cleaning locations being checked by default, and of course your post will hopefully have other folk checking the changes in new versions before going straight ahead and running them.
