October Desktops

I wish we had castles like that over here. :(

Me too....this is as close as we are going to get to it in the US and it's just down the road from me!

The castle is in Northumberland and is called Bamburgh castle. There was first a castle of sorts on the site around 600AD. The present one has been there around a thousand years, although it has been rebuilt in parts due to wars and cannon fire etc during the middle ages.

Northumberland has the most castles of any county in England as they were built to stop England being attacked by Scotland.

and the Romans built Hadrian's Wall to do the much the same and neither really worked!

I love Bamburgh Castle, it's to my great shame that I haven't been there since the 1980s, yet it's only just up the road from me, relatively speaking (a mere 50 miles).

interestin .. :P

i LOVE history :P

Most everyone knows this one I think.

So you're Wintering in Bamburgh Castle. Can I stay the weekend?

Or else you could stay here

Sputnik, Tourbillon castle in Switzerland...atmospheric.

A lot of the castles in Northumberland such as Bamburgh are still lived in.

The one below at Dunstanburgh, is not so far from away, although not lived in now. However what you cannot see from the photo is at the other side is a magnificent links golf course. Imagine taking a shot with that in your line of sight (ninth hole)

Dunstanburgh must once have been a very imposing castle. Here's another one of Tourbillon (left), posing together with the ch?teau de Val?re (which actually has a roof :) )

Looks too draughty for me Sputnik. Central heating's probably not installed either.

I was right clicking on the wrong flaming picture above. The Dunstanburgh one. If I'd clicked on the right one I would have found the info:
