v4.03 is not clearing index.dat for me. Any ideas as to why?
Which one ?
there are 17 of them on my Windows 7 system.
And none on Windows 8.
Hi, Dan9870.
What OS are you running?
A while back, it was stated on here that CCleaner did not delete index.dat files, but rather it emptied the operative ones of content.
That was true at the time. I checked. It wasn't easy.
It is probably still true, but I don't know of a simple way to check it, maybe someone will chime in with a way.
The result was that the file size for index.dat was unchanged but there was no data in the file.
The default for xp is either 16 kb or 32 kb for a newly created index.dat file.

I'm using windows 7 64 bit. And its not just not deleting the files, when I use "Analyze" it doesn't find any index.dat.
I believe (from what I remember when I tested this some time ago) that the index.dat files are cleaned in the manner as Login explains, when the Temp Internet Files are cleaned. I don't think that the Index.dat setting does anything, or if it does it doesn't tell anyone that it's doing it.
There are plenty of index.dat readers about so you could test this yourself.
