No Internet/Email/Document Access

Hi there,

I'm a beginner & my Laptop came with XP & CCleaner pre-loaded. It had got slightly slower so I ran analysis & clean. My boot-up from cold now takes 8 minutes & I have no internet/email or document access from either desktop or menu. I've followed the site instructions to restore .reg files which has made no difference & looked elsewhere on the site for help. The most comon error I'm getting at the moment is that the application failed because ATL.DLL component can not be found, re-installation may fix the problem. Now I know very little about computers, I do my business accounts & write letters on them & I surf the net for fun & info, that's it so this message means nothing to me, I don't know where I'd find this component or how to go about reinstallation & if I use my Windows recovery discs I'd loose alot of recent data. So is there a good samaritan or anyone out there that can help a computer illiterate person please.

Regards.

I take it your laptop must be second hand as no new ones come with ccleaner pre-installed.

If you boot into safe mode are you able to do things?

http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

To rule out the posibility you may have a virus/malware infection it may be an idea to follow the steps here

http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=20120

Try safe mode with networking (instead of just safe mode) from the steps in the first link I posted. If no go ask a friend to download them for you to a memory stick/usb flash drive for you.

If you have an original xp disc, not the recovery discs that came with the laptop, then you could try doing a repair install.

Another option would be Paragon Rescue disc

http://www.paragon-software.com/home/rk-express/

You would have to get someone to download this free app and burn the .iso file to disc for you. Then you can boot your computer with it and put the files you need to save onto a usb stick or even an external drive.

So first try safe mode.

Next follow the malware removal thread steps from the link I posted.

Hi Hazelnut,

Many thanks for the info & so clearly explained. It got me to networking "safe mode" so I can access my files & perhaps download them but still no go on internet, system restore, troubleshooting, network diagnostics, help centre etc, all of which I've tried but it still wants ATL.DLL or RUNDLL for these & takes ages to tell me. I may be missing something. You're right by the way the machine was 2nd hand & didn't come with any discs. It has a genuine C.O.A sticker but I thought the rescue discs would be cheaper. I've borrowed this machine but it's on Win 2000 & is temperamental. Anyway, thank you once again.

Best Regards.

hope it helpss.....i mean hope it works..instructions.

Q: How do I install the dll-file?

A:Use an Unzip-application to select the dll-file and extract it to your system directory. By default, this is C:\Windows\System (Windows 95/98/Me), C:\WINNT\System32 (Windows NT/2000), or C:\Windows\System32 (Windows XP).

You may also put it in the directory of the program, that is asking for the file.

If putting it in the system directory isn't enough, you may need to use regsvr32 by the following way:

1. Press Start and select Run

2. Type CMD and press Enter

3. Type regsvr32 "filename".dll and press Enter

atl.zip

atl.zip

Are you able to rescue your files and documents using either the Paragon rescue disc or safe mode with networking?

Are you considering following the malware removal thread?

What are the Windows rescue discs you talk of in post number 1 as in your next post you say it didn't come with any.

Hi people,

Thanks aqua, for the directions & attachment. I'll try what you suggest over the next few days as it takes so long for the machine to do anything now & at the moment it won't read any drive other than 'C', & only that just, but does seem to have intermitant moments of co-operation if I persist. (Personification or what?).

Hi Hazelnut, I can access & edit but not move or copy files in safemode with networking at the moment because of the drive reading problem. I've downloaded the paragon rescue disk onto the Win 2000 machine (which doesn't support Paragon) but is ready if I can get the XP machine to read drives other than 'C'.

I'm going to follow the malware removal thread once I can get the XP machine back on-line just on the basis that my existing anti-viral and spyware checker may have missed something. The rescue discs I referred to in Post 1 were those I am going to have to buy if I can't undo this damage in another way.

Thanks everyone,

Regards
