Net framework updates

Hi

I know it is necessary to keep al the previous netframework versions, but do I have to update all the versions or only the latest one? I`m asking that because yesterday I made a manual update for net framework 2 and it messed with the functioning of net framework 4.

I have heard that they're supposed to be backwards compatible, much like Java, however my experience is that this is not always the case. Others who use .NET would be able to inform you better than myself (paging TheWebAtom)

I usually update the latest or the needed/mentioned version (first). In some cases I have to clean/uninstall .NET Framework completely (with this http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx) and then reinstall them.
