Anyone know of a good freeware video editor? I don't need anything real complex or sophisticated -- actually, a simple program that performs the basics well would be just perfect.
There's a programme called Avitricks Classic might do what you want.
Available here:
Before you download it, there's a Tutorial Video here:
What a timely subject, I have been looking for a freeware video editor for the last week, so I'll give it a try as well.
Completely forgot about an Open Source programme I found for someone else on here recently. (Although a search shows that Hazel and Eldmannen first posted this last year).
Anyway, it looks pretty comprehensive, and there is good support and extensive tutorials.
DennisD When i asked for a video editior freeware, i went and downloaded jahshaka, i installed it, and the runtime files, but it crashed like mad, wouldent let me open any video file, it crashed when doing anything. Even if it did work, i wouldent understand howto use it. It is confusing like gimp when you first use it. The reviews on download.com agree with me, its buggy and non useable for most people.

Hi User000, first of all call me Dennis, I prefer it.
Secondly, apologies for you having such a hassle with Jahshaka.
The fact that it had been recommended on here a couple of times previously without any negative feedback, and the fact that back on June 16th you said you were using it from the 3 or 4 suggestions given, I thought that it must be an OK programme.
If you had came back then, and informed me of your bad experience, that information could have been helpful to others.
We all try to help each other on here, and I did try each programme myself before posting last month, and although Jahshaka did seem to have its limitations, I was lucky not to have the same bad experiences you did.
So my apologies again, but if you do have problems with any software suggested here, please come back and post your findings.
For the benefit of this thread, did you find a suitable alternative?

There are great freeware editors out there, it's just that you may need a different one for each format.
For example:
For mpeg files, there's a nice program called Cuttermaran
However, to use it, you have to demux (separate the video from the audio) the files, and combine them again when the editing is finished.
That sounds harder than it is. There are free tools that do it. The most popular one is probably Tmpgenc (which can also do mpeg1 editing)
For wmv files, the best one I've found is Cutassistant
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Cut_Assistant
When used with Asfbin, you can really make nice edits of wmv files.

For an all-in-one free editing tool, Avidemux is one of the best, but a little more advanced than those above
http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/
Another highly recommended freeware editing tool is Virtualdub:
You can download it from www.virtualdub.org
but you should look at the different modifications of the program at Videohelp.com. Several programmers have modified Virtualdub so that it can handle wmv and mpeg files.

Note that both Avidemux and Virtualdub also have video conversion features. They are two of the most recommended freeware programs among audio/video enthusiasts.
Lots of good info there Brown Sugar.

You have nothing to apologize for, you were only trying to help, sorry if i came on like it was your fault.

Methinks you've done this editing before
Thanks for the good info,

No worries squire, but BrownSugar seems to have summed it up pretty well, in that they all appear to have limitations in which types of file they handle.
Hope you find something suitable.

Thanks! Glad to be of assistance.

LOL! I have. It took a few years, but the person who wrote Asfbin wrote the best wmv file joiner there is. You hardly even see the breaks between the files.
With a program like Cuttermaran or Avidemux (and also Virtualdub), you can do almost any kind of video editing.
For example, I plan to take a friend's wedding video and edit it for him.
With those programs and nice FREE conversion tools like:
Winff (very good and simple GUI front end for ffmpeg)
or the more advanced:
Mediacoder
http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/
he can have the edited video converted to Xvid, or SVCD (closest codecs to VOB/DVD in quality playable on Divx certified home DVD players).
Another nice little converter that many seem to like (I haven't used it yet) is Auto Gordian Knot or Auto Gk
I'm not dismissing Super from Erightsoft.com. I used it last year before I reinstalled my OS. I'm just reluctant to install it now until I read that more people are having success with it (and after they make their site a little easier to navigate and download from).
Been following through those links you provided.
Some pretty amazing free stuff there, if only I could understand what half the features did, I could get right into that.
Nice links.
I've heard that this one is ok:

I think you may need another shot of Ovaltine.
