Balmer appears to be developing senility ahead of time. He's gonna have to step down if BG wants to realize a turn-around. And sometimes, it's not always about innovation. But setting a standard. And standards are important in tech.
It is also important to keep BG bashing in mind. Everyone likes to rag on the big guy, calling them control freaks and imposing draconian practices, monopolizing. IMHO that speaks more of the basher than the bash-ee.
If Windows 8 SP1 doesn't fix Windows 8 I believe you will see a lot of people move to tablets/macs faster than they already are.
Well according to some articles on Softpedia.com News Windows 9 is coming. Now if they don't go back to a more standardized Windows UI they'll alienate many more people who loathe Windows 8.

For the time being I'll keep Windows 7. Seems I was lucky to buy a laptop at the right time (i.e. not with Vista or Win 8 installed).
I agree. MS needs to watch its step VERY carefully. They simply can't afford any to make (too many) mistakes any more. Too much competition and MS has been too complacent in recent years.
I don't know.. It's not only MS having problems with usability. Apple's iTunes, a front-line premiere application for media playback and portable device sync, is getting a lot of hate for the latest version. And from the looks of it its a headache-inducing application. A rare thing for Apple. But it's enough to make me consider the Android ecosphere for my next purchase.
Apple's project management really dropped the ball and broke a lot of little things. Their tech support forms have threads with over 1,000 replies - all focused around usability issues with iTunes. I bet Mr. Jobs is shaking his head right about now.
It seems in the rush to do something, anything, people are banging into walls and showing their stupid side. MS and APPLE alike. Companies need to be taught that change for change's sake isn't a good thing.

The thing about itunes though is that you don't actually have to use it at all to use the device. Itunes has always been a clunky piece of software(especially on windows). It's also miles better than whats offered on android. Anyone with a galaxy s3 will tell you samsung kies is 10000000000x worse than itunes. Half the time it wont even recognize your phone is plugged into the pc. The good thing about iOS and Android is you don't have to use these crappy applications, everything can be managed on the device if you want.

If we could get the corporations to stop dumbing things down, we'd be ok. When they do that they remove useful power-user features and thus narrow the appeal to newcomers. Thing is I don't believe they even know they're doing it. Stupidity is a disease creeping into lots of corporations.

iTunes 9 and 10 are pretty nice. It's iTunes 11 causing the problems. It's about workflow changes and missing features and library behavior.
Most of all it's about the UI layout. Much the same complaint with Windows8. Since Mr. Jobs passed away, Apple has gone downhill. This is the 3rd instance of FAIL.
Ever since BG retired MS has gone downhill. Win8 is their latest fail.
I disagree that Apples gone downhill since Jobs died. Stock price is still through the roof, still making new products(iphone 5, ipad mini, retina ipad, retina macbook) their track record is just about the best in technology right now. They supposedly have a new watch coming out soon. I don't think a crappy itunes redesign signals that they are in trouble. I'm not even especially an apple fan (only have ipad) but I'm not gonna trash a company that is actually doing a lot right (for now).
MS on the other hand? Surface isn't selling. Windows 8 is a mess. I like Microsoft products, I'm not going to switch from windows any time soon but I'm not a fan of what they are doing right now.

I seriously doubt it. Although an official SP4 .EXE patch for XP would be very nice indeed since so many Microsoft Updates seem to indicate it in the registry.
This is all very good news. At least I'm not alone hating win8. I can see them extending Windows 7, and I'd be totally surprised with an SP4 for XP.
You know, win8 is nothing but the product of corporate busywork. Nothing was wrong with 7 or XP.
Personally, I think Win8 is OK, maybe not great but Is it an improvement over Win7?, Yes. In almost every benchmark you can name.
Having said that, Metro sucks, and why oh why remove the Start button. But it's only a short learning curve to overcome.

Win8 seems to be suffering the same fate as Vista, nothing wrong per say with the OS, just a couple of glitches the media has jumped all over and given the whole OS a bad name.
Reducing the price of Win8 just makes it look like an OS that's been put the in reduced bin for a quick sale to get rid of old stock.
@Keatah, agree - nothing wrong with Win7 or XP, but you can say the same for 98 or 2000.
we have to live with the fact that Windows, Mac, Linux etc will change for change sake.

less than 400 days now till XP officially dies. will there be SP4? - almost definitely not.
will Win7 be extended? - based on popularity and sales, you'd have to say yes.
will Win8 be 'changed'? - they will have to if only to get sales up.
What irks me is that the reasons for win8 failing are made clear. And yet parent company does nothing. And we're seeing the same issue with iTunes 11 from Apple.
I also don't understand why M$ wants to kill XP, it works, it's functional, it holds 40% marketshare.

I moved from XP to Win 7 about 10 months ago because I wanted to "go wireless" and my XP laptop didn't have a wireless internet hardware build into it. My new laptop came with Win 7, had the luck I skipped the buggy Vista.
Wish I could get Win XP's Explorer for Win 7. That's the one thing I REALLY miss. And I wish MS would focus more on fixing a number of annoying and (at least) two blatant bugs in Win 7. It seems MS puts an emphasis on fixing security issues.

MS went gung-ho for W8 because they were hell bent on dominating the phone market. A few years ago a middle-range HP Pavilion tower cost US$600. Now a tiny hand-held iPhone or Samsung Galaxy S3 costs...US$600. They're basically selling tiny PCs for the same price. Thus the frantic demand to produce phones. But as usual MS is copying already-created designs in order to catch up.
