Loss of file associations

I ran CCleaner the other day as part of regular maintenance before backup imaging. I had Firefox open at the time and CCleaner told me it couldn't process Firefox contents while it was open. I wasn't concerned about that, so ignored the message. After finishing the maintenance, I when back into Firefox, to discover that all my bookmarks (collected over some 11 years) were gone! Finally, after considerable searching through Mozilla forums, I found that some how a new default folder of bookmarks had been created and that mine had been sidelined. Was not able to make my old folder the default one, but was able to copy my old bookmarks into the new folder. Hope this helps someone who finds themself in the same predicament.

The above has been a wind up to my current predicament. At the same time that happened, I lost file association to the Internet shortcuts on my desktop. If I try to launch them, I get a message saying there is no association for that type and that I need to create an association via Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types. I have done this repeatedly, but the desktop shortcuts still produce the same error message. However, if I have Firefox open and click on one of the destop shortcuts, it works! I have no idea how to get around this. I am a long time second level support tech and have never encountered anything like this. Any suggestions??

Besure you have the latest version of Mozilla Firefox which is 1.5.0.1

http://www.GetFirefox.com

Goto "Tools" in the menubar. Select "Options...",

now click on the "General" tab if it isnt selected.

Now look where it says "Default Browser" and click the "Check Now" button and select "Yes".

Have done all that previously. No change. I'm getting to the point now where I'm tenpted to make IE the default browser and see if that works, but that kind of defeats the purpose of having Firefox in the first place, no?

I had Firefox set as the default browser. However, when I set IE as the default browser under Control Panel, then went back to Firefoz and reset it as the default browser, everything came back. That's been driving me mad for over a week! Thanks to all for the assistance. The power of brainstorming, huh?!?!?
