Little Help Please

I am having problems with slowness on my pc and have issues, i have ran antivirus, ccleaner, spyware remover, this and another registry cleaner.

i want to defrag but i havent enough freespace to run it. it seems the more i delete or move files to another partition, i lose space rather than gain it.

my windows file is over 25 gig and im sure thats no right either.

i wouldnt normally be lazy but i need to get an assignment done by tomorrow night otherwise ill have to repeat the module, but i really dont have time to read all the documentation and forum and wondered if i could get some help please. i need to install a very large and demanding program for my assisgnment and although ill install it on another partition i know it will put files on my c drive and im conserned my free space will become to low, also my computer is not performing efficiently enough to run the program smoothly.

the greyed out items on the default settings, which one are safe to run to make space, especially space in the windows file.

i know its not the right forum but the defraggler does that have a required amount of space to start if so what? also is there a defragger that will use another partition space to move the files around.

also any ideas why im losing space when i delete or more stuff to another partition when i should be gaining space.

thanks in advance.

What operating system are you using?

XP pro

You may wish to try cleaning out some of your old restore points to free up a bit of space.

Hi Tammera, and welcome to the forum.

It's a difficult problem for anyone to answer without having the computer sitting in front of them.

I suppose we could start by having you check out some XP features which usually take up a lot of space.

I'm guessing you have System Restore running, so have a look to see how many System Restore points you have. You could use Disk Cleanup to delete all but the last one which would free up some space.

Remove Restore Points

To remove all restore points except the most recent restore point, follow these steps:

Click Start, and then click My Computer.

Right-click the disk in which you want to free up space, and then click Properties.

Click the General tab, and then click Disk Cleanup. *

Click the More Options tab, and then under System Restore, click Clean up.

Click Yes to remove all but the most recent restore point.

Click OK, click Yes to proceed with this action, and then click OK.

* Wait until it's scanned your disk, and then go straight to the next stage, the "More Options" tab.

You could also check to see if you have "Hibernation" active, and if so, switch it off as it reserves a pretty large percentage of your drive for hibernating. A total waste.

Disable "Hibernation" in XP:

See how much space you can reclaim with these, and then post back.

Hope that helps.

Ok that helped alot a little over 2 gig removed, still not enough to defrag though, im at 14% only 1% under, will that be ok? what else can i delete please?

Any idea why im losing space rather than gaining, i was at 3.53 free earlier, deleted about 3000 emails, and a few other things, then it went to 3.34 free, and yes i am emptying my recycle bin ;)

I dont have hibernate enabled. Also if it gets mentioned, my virtual memory is on another partition.

Defrag programs usually need about 12% of your drive to do a defrag, but it depends on how many big files you have and how big.

You could try downloading Treesize (free version) which will give you a visual display of all the folders and files on your hard drive, and you may see something you can either do without, or move to another drive.

Maybe any movie/video files you have on your C: drive.

Uninstalling programs doesn't usually give up too much space, but video and movie files usually do. Do you have a lot of music files (albums) you could move to another drive?

EDIT: My minds a blank at the moment why you are losing space by deleting files.

EDIT 2: Almost forgot. Is your page file on another partition of the same drive, or a separate drive?

If it's on the same drive that will probably slow Windows down, as the one disk controller is having to write to your System Drive and the page file on the separate partition at the same time.

How much physical memory do you have by the way?

No movies, music, anything movable on the drive, although ill check out that program.

i have 3 partition c: and d: are on the same drive e: its own drive.

c: windows and programs files that must be on c:,

d: most program files, documents and stuff

e: music, videos, backups of c: and d:

page files on d: shall i move it to e:?

2 gig memory.

Moving your page file onto your E: drive can also improve performance because you have more I/O on your system drive. Which drive (C:, D:, E:) are you trying to defrag?

Ok i managed to defrag, and i am now installing my visual studio and my suspisions are correct, although i have put the main program on d: its still going to leave me with a few hundred meg free space on drive c:.

i dont think i can do any more for performance (ill put page files on e: now) its do or die now with the program. but i must make more space which goes back to the greyed out windows files with the cleaner, i need to be ruthless if windows bites the dust im fully backed up.

thanks again for all the help.

You could try removing your page file to free up the grey blocks, defragging, then putting the page file back in.. if its on the same partition that is.

If you still have problems Tammera, post back as there's probably other things which can be done to make your whole set-up a bit more streamlined, for want of a better expression.

The suggestions given were really based upon your urgency to get that program up and running, which I hope works OK for you.

Thanks for the help peeps, i moved the page files to my drive E:

i managed to install visual studio and its running ok, when installing it threatened to leave me with about 500 meg on drive c:, even though i installed to drive d: and the colour ran from my face. i knew it would take a good portion of drive c: reguardless of where i put it, but not that much. but in the end, it left me with about 2 gig on drive c: i think i can cope with that at the moment. not sure if theres much else i can do till i get the time to format and reinstall c:
