Large hard drives report incorrect size

Any hard drive larger than 1TB is returning incorrect information. My 2TB reports the following with the portable version of Speccy v1.25.674

Um 1893 GB is a 2 TB drive I'm not sure what your are reporting

Compare that info with that given for the 2TB drive. Heads, cyclinders and sector values as well as the drive serial number, speed and a wealth of other very useful info are reported. Drives larger than 1TB report a ‘Model Capacity For This Specific Drive’ value less than the real value. For the 2TB drive I quoted the figure is given as 200GB where it should be 2000GB. The ‘Real size’ is given as 0 bytes for the 2TB drive but correctly for the 500GB drive.

I agree the partition info is reported correctly but the information shown above for the 500GB is not given for the 2TB drive.

how many drives > 1TB and how many < 500GB are you using for your baseline?

maybe it's simply the lack of info available from the drives firmware.

for example your Hitachi 500GB shows Product Family and Series Prefix, my Seagate 500GB doesn't.

Speccy v1.18.379 reports correct info for all 3 drives except for the 2TB where ‘Model Capacity For This Specific Drive 200GB’ which should be 2000GB not 200GB. Speccy v1.25.674 does not report the same info as v1.18.379 did.

Ok I'm seeing what you mean for some reason 1.25 shows zero bytes for the 2040 where 1.18 is giving 1863 (the correct).

I hate to ask but, what about speccy 1.19 through 1.24. Could you test those versions to see exactly when the sourness begins, this will help the developers pinpoint the error. From what I can tell, some where in the mix, size figuring for drives was changed (as evidenced by the small change in size on the other two drives in your two reports) and in that equation something is programmed incorrectly. As the original post asks does anyone else have a 2 tb+ drive that they can spec? That'll allow the developers to see if it is just this model of drive, or even specific to this particular drive.

Here are the results for Speccy Portable versions 1.20.446, 1.21.491 and 1.22.536. It seems it broke between versions 1.20 and 1.21. Version 1.22 gives a different result from 1.21 so maybe the code changed there as well. The 'Model Capacity For This Specific Drive 200GB' line is wrong in all cases as it should say 2000GB not 200GB.

I have no expertise in these matters, so I'll leave this to the smart people, but there seems to be some problem with this model HHD, perhaps it's down to Samsung, not Speccy

Before getting started with my bug report I would like to say how much I've enjoyed and appreciated Speccy for the past 5-odd years. Please keep up the fine work.

I have Speccy 2.29.714 (64-bit) installed this month and it also reports my 2TB Hitachi drive erroneously. I have another Hitachi HDS721050CLA660 on another machine and it is also giving back same readout. Unless these drives are reporting themselves incorrectly Speccy needs some adjustment.

Further, Speccy does not specify PATA drives. It calls them (ATA), which seems to me very generic as all drives are reported as an "ATA Device" just previously on same line. PATA and SATA are different iterations of ATA and should be reported correctly.

The items I consider errors are in RED.

I suspect that the specifications you are claiming to be incorrect are being taken from the disk model ID (HUA722020ALA331). Model Capacity for this Specific Drive is the name Hitachi assigns to characters 8 and 9 of the disk ID. These are the first two significant digits of the disk capacity, in your case 20 (gb). I guess that Hitachi adds an additional zero perhaps because this was the way to do it when disks were smaller.

Digits 12 and 13 (A3) identify the disk as Serial ATA 3 gb/s. There's no code for PATA.

No doubt Hitachi know how to interpret these figures, and they may be a carry-over from old habits, as is so much in computing. So Speccy is correct in what it's reporting.

No, the Hitachi is a 2 TB drive and is reporting as 200 GB in the summary. I just updated to Speccy 1.30.740 from 1.29.
