JRE 5.0 update 9

Remove them before installing this update or after?

As far as I know, it is best to uninstall previous versions first via add and remove, reboot and then install new version. (I also use ccleaner before reboot!)

Uninstalling the old version using Add or Remove Programs will leave behind a folder (in this case C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_08 or older) which should be manually deleted.

Thanks for that info Glen, however I did do it via add and remove yesterday and I don't have that folder left in c/programs!

There were some Sun folders left in my Documents and Settings folder, which I trashed before installing the update. Thanks.

Ditto. :)

Odd  I've had the leftover folder issue ever since version 5.0 and confirmed it in several "how to update Java" articles before deleting them.

I should have been a bit clearer Glen, the one I had to uninstall manually was in C/docs and settings/user/local settings/application data.

Hope you weren't too confused by what I posted!! :)

I wonder why the Check for Updates option via the Java icon in the Control Panel never works because according to the documentation it's supposed to be able to auto-update itself. And since it has never worked on my system I don't allow the update checker to run on Windows startup.

Same thing on mine. I don't remember it ever saying it updated. But I check the 'Latest Updates' on FileHippo every morning, so I just do my updating from there.

I agree, it's a complete waste of time.

This update 9 is quite minor update. I just recently upgraded to 8 and i'm not going to up upgrade to this latest one.

Thanks for head up, just installed it.

Which one should I download? JDK 6, JDK 6+Netbeans, or Java Runtime Environment 6?

I'm guessing JDK 6, just from reading the some of the details.

Wait, I just checked my Add/ Remove Programs list, and it says I have Java 2 Runtime Environment, version 1.4.2-I think- :P A little outdated.

Java Runtime Environment. JDK = Java Development Kit which is only useful for making Java applications. Netbeans is an IDE for Java.
