Is My Index.dat Deleting?

I'm not sure if this is an issue with the system but... I was using ccleaner the other night for the first time and it pulled up the files to clean, also listing my index.dat files. However, they were listed as having NOTHING in them, which I know can't be true.

I went further to check out the issue and got a index.dat analyzer and it pulled up tons of items within the index.dat files.

Please Help???

Index.dat files are deleted after a reboot because they are locked by Windows :)

Thank You, yes I have read that in the forums - however, my index.dat file reads as if there is nothing even in there. It is always at 0-k, is it always like this due to the rebooting for deletion or is there a flaw where the ccleaner isn't getting to my index.dat files?

It's the same for FF cookies too. I think it's something to do with extracting the info from these files whilst Windows is running. In any event they are cleared (deleted) at boot time whatever size they actually are.

Good initial question. I'm currently investigating a cookie issue and I'm curious about index.dat in the following folder: "%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies".

When I right-click the file and choose properties, the Created Date is January 19 (last time I installed Windows anew), now, I use CCleaner all the time and have index.dat checked and usually certain cookies to keep. Not sure how that all works, but if the Index.dat there would really be deleted, I would surely see a more recent Created Date... No?!

And when I open the index.dat file with Notepad I see stuff I really shouldn't be seeing...

:o

Hi Mike.

The only thing I have in "%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\", is a "Themes" folder (XP).

I wonder if that file would be a one off removal with it being created when you installed Windows?
