Internet Explorer 8 Not Opening Correctly After Running CCLeaner

Hello:

When I run the registry cleaner in CCleaner and then open my IE8, only the top bars appear and the rest of the screen stays white. I have to go to my saved registry file and merge it back in to get IE8 to work correctly again.

Would anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks!

In all likelihood this is not a CCleaner problem. But for troubleshooting here's some inspiration:

1. Are you running the latest version v2.24.1010?

3. How often do you run chkdsk and scannow? Files do get damaged from ordinary use. Often times problems like the one you have can be solved by running these procedures. Registry errors are corrected as well.

5. Check if you need updates. The freeware program Secunia PSI can do that for you - you'll most likely prefer advanced settings. Microsoft Update as well but for fewer programs. Use the Custom button in there. Not Express. Secunia PSI: http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/

6. A reinstall of IE could also be in question. Microsoft article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378/en-us

Run CCleaner and perform a registry scan. But dont fix the items. Right click in the list of problems found and select 'save to text file'. You can either post the file here so we can see whats being removed or you can open the text file, select all, copy and paste it into a reply. Which ever is easier for ya.

Seems like when CC removes the registry item(s) that its breaking a feature set of Internet Explorer. A plug-in/addon would be my first guess.

Also check IE -> Tools -> Internet Options -> General tab -> Homepage. If your preferred Homepage is missing put the link back in.

Perhaps Piriform Forum's Spyware Hell can help you. This about:blank phenomenon could be one of their specialties: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=20120

Hi ePost:

Thanks for your help!

Yes, I have the latest version of CCleaner installed.

I don't run chkds and scannow regularly, but will now. :) I did the chkdsk and it repaired one thing. When I try to run scannow, I get an error that scannow is not found.

I ran the Secunia PSI and it found 4 things to update regarding QuickTime, Macromedia Flash, Mozilla Firefox, and a Retrospect program (for external backup drive).

I don't think re-installing IE will help, since I already did this and encountered the same "post-CCLeaner" problem with IE.

Cheers,

Hi ePost:

Yes, my homepage is in there.

Thanks for the link to the Spyware Hell article. I'll run the suggested procedure for good measure.

Hi Disk4mat:

I ran CCleaner and "saved to text file" as you instructed, however, once I do this CCleaner closes and I can't find the text file anywhere on my system.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Dragonegg

It will be called log.txt, and should be in "My Documents" by default.

The txt part may not be visible if you have "Hide Extensions For Known File Types" checked in "Tools\Folder Options\View".

Hi DennisD:

Nope, I searched my whole hard drive twice for a "log.txt" file. Nothing.

Thanks,

Dragonegg

It might be easier if when saving the log file you save it to your desktop. It will be much easier to find. Also after saving it from CC, it should appear in the Start menu under the Recent Items menu.

You could always give this a try

Thanks Disk4Mat, I'll try that.
