I have it more manageble to use

:)

What I did on Windows XP, was the following first: Start to Control Panel to open System to Tab on System Restore to reduce the number of restore points. I have an 80 GB HDD and it is set to 1095 MB than the maxiumum. Then turn off System Restore. when it says:"Turned Off" uncheck the box to turn it back on. [You can create a new restore point to remove any items already deleted]. The I run Wipe & I will see only 2 boxes for MFT - the rest are cleaned out, sometimes my drive was 81% and now, 84-6%. I love Defraggler but I use CCleaner first. :D

It is bad form to advise people to turn off System restore. Please do not do so. Turning off system restore removes all exisiting restore points, and you don't really point this out in your advice.

Nerg, that just depends!

If someone has had a very nasty trojan/rootkit/malware/virus on their machine & it is removed, then if those restore points are then left on the PC, the INFECTED points will STILL EXIST!

This means, the user could revert at any time to the prior infected state & totally reverse any repairs made to the system!

I think it depends on the situation.

I too am for having system restore enabled, but I also believe that certain instances call for a total flush of them so you can create NEW CLEAN restore points!

Disagree.

You are fully correct in what is relevant to malware removal,

BUT Malware victims should NEVER take advice from a defragmentation forum.

They should only take advice from malware specialists on a malware fighting forum.

I agree with you in being correct in relevance to malware removal.

But if no-one should take advice from defragmentation forums, why are you advising them? LOL!

I had to ask!

@all Stop being uncivil please, or this thread will be locked.

@darclew7

  1. Your Sys restore off suggestion had nothing to do with malware.
  2. What I was getting at is this, I will say in in very plain language:
  3. On this forum we ask that you not provide members with the suggestion to turn off system restore even on a temporary basis. The reason for this is many people who come here worried about (say) the "manageability"Defraggler and/or CCleaner will see this advice and turn off system restore, without knowledge of it's devastating consequences. Yes in some rare cases a admin or moderator may give this advice to a particular user for a particular problem. We know what we are doing when we suggest that, and make it clear that that is for a specific issue not "to make more manageable".
  4. Any malware questions are indeed referred to the spyware hell forum where PROFESSIONALS handle every case hands on. Malware questions are not allowed to be answered by Neither Members nor Moderators in the Piriform software section of this site.
  5. Your thread really makes no sense. Start with the Title "I have it more manageable to use CCleaner to Defraggler". What does this even mean. How is turning off system restore going to make anything more manageable, in fact what it will do is allow the Defraggler or CCleaner to cause unfixable damage only to then not allow the user to roll their machine back to before the removed the crucial reg entry or moved/removed something that was needed.

Nuff said; the skinny is that this is a rule here: Do not give the advice to turn system restore off.
