HOWDOI? Opt Out of Google Installation?

O/S = XP, SvcPk 3, updates current.

Dear Folk:

How do I opt out of the Google installation while updating/installing my Pifiform apps (CClean 304, Defraggler 2.03.282, etc....)? Heretofore we've always had an option during the installation to Opt Out of taking the Google (or Yahoo, or whatever) installation. But now there seems to be no way to avoid the install.

Here is a picture of the install dbox for the unwanted "extra:"

Is there an installation switch that can be used on a command line to Opt Out of the Google install? I updated my Defraggler yesterday, and it took me just about half a day today to get rid of the hated Google gupdate app and accompanying "service," which just burn up precious resources. Plus, Google is just so darned "invasive." It must have made at least 200 or 300 registry entries.

To make matters worse, the installed Google (gupdate or Google Toolbar, or whatever it was) did not even show up in XP's Add Rempve Programs. It did show up (or "something" Google showed up) in the list of programs displayed in the Microsoft clean-up install tool; but silly me: even employing the clean-up install tool wouldn't take out the Registration Database entries. So,....I had to delete the new folder for "Google" that appeared in my "Program Files" folder hierarchy and then do the ole' "registry dig." THAT is a tedium tantamount to spending an afternoon sentenced to hell as anyone who has had to perform such a procedure knows all too well.

After wasting the time getting rid of the unwanted Google install I am afraid at this point to update my CClean. I just don't have the time to piddle around in the registry digging all the Google junk out. So, after going through the registry dig tedium pursuant to my upgrading my Defraggler, when I encountered the above dialog box while trying to upgrade my CClean, it stopped me cold from proceeding any further, and I canceled my upgrade installation then and there.

Once bitten, twice shy, or, stated differently, the burned child fears the fire.

At that point, since I do want to upgrade my CClean (been using it for ye-e-e-er-zzz -- keeps the box running fast and clean), I figured I'd best get myself out to the forums here and inquire of those who know more about these things than I as to how I get around this seemingly intractable conundrum.

If I wanted to use the Google Toolbar, I'd just download the thing; but, after having done that long ago upon my own initiative, I found out that I have no use for a Google Toolbar; and it does consume resources, even if one attempts to ignore it. So why shove something down my throat that I've already tried before and decided I didn't need or want? Where does that get Mr. Google in the larger, or smaller, scheme of things -- other than to make one more convert to the "Google is an Intrusive Annoyance Club?"

Any help on installing the great Piriform software, which IS in fact highly useful, without having my head dunked in a bucket of "Google," would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Best regards,

Nuncus

There should be a tickbox, but I don't see one there which is indeed odd... I would recommend using the slim version for now ... http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds

Some installers to opt-out you just use the [X] close button at the very upper-right of the box - the same way you'd close a running program on your system - well at least that's what I've read on SnapFiles.com to opt-out of installing some 3rd party junk since clicking cancel would install it anyways - not that I'm saying any Piriform installer would do this since I actually don't know.

Dear Winapp2.ini:

Thank you very much for calling my attention to the "Slim-no toolbar" installation. I just now uninstalled my old CClean and installed the "Slim" upgrade.

I only performed the uninstall because I was not sure exactly what "no toolbar" meant: normally I just upgrade on top of an existing installation.

Well, VOILA! No "Google," or at least I don't see a "Google" subfolder under my "Program Files" folder. I haven't checked the registry yet; but I think I'm about to be a happy camper.

The "Slim" version appears to be the same as the CClean program interface of old but without an installation of the Google Toolbar.

Hm,...I wonder why the Piriform folk don't make this clear on their basic installation page. Oh, well, who knows what kind of "chains" the Google folk wrapped around the Piriform folk in the contractual "deal."

It'd be nice if the Piriform folk would just say "-no Google (or Yahoo) Toolbar Installation," or something really clear like that.

Piriform makes really good stuff; I wish the economics were such that they could be a little bit more straightforward about it all, however.

Again, thanks for the tip. Actually, once one actually knows about the "Slim" edition, the "Slim" edition is actually a much better solution than the old "Opt-out" method inasmuch as so many folk seemed to overlook unchecking the Toolbar installation check boxes during the installation process.

Just bear in mind that the slim version comes out a few days after normal releases :)

Also as far as I can tell, your graphic options are non-default and seem to be causing the "ccleaner google offer" to be bigger than it ought to be. The check box is there but your visual style is making it impossible to get to
