Some of you guys may already be aware of the "Windows Embedded Industry, formerly known as Windows Embedded POSReady", which makes this a possibility, but I admit it's new to me.
I would have to think hard about getting into this although I would have the luxury of a back up "Image" to restore my system out of trouble.
I think all us XP users would be interested in each others comments on this.
Finally, I stress again. Read and research carefully.
I remember doing some system hacking or is that tweaking (probably both) back when I had Win98 that would allow me to install updates well past the OS deathday. It worked alright enough and I didn't have any worse instability in that awful OS but it was a pain to track down the updates and manually install them. Of course this XP "tweak" sounds different since, it would obviously be using Automatic Updates but still could be opening a can of rotten worms that trashes a stable but vulnerable XP system.
i really hope that by 2019 no one is running xp at home.. thatd be like running windows 3.1 today D:
I know people think Microsoft is just pushing 8.1 which I'll personally never have installed, but I'd suspect some compatibility issue at some point such as not being able to start Windows, or other black magic, etc. Just how far back does someone want to go with a disk image that didn't have any of those updates installed I wonder, problems may not arise in 1-6 months but longer which makes using a very old disk image less desirable.
Andavari, and others, most users in the world who are still using XP (and most users in general), by which I mean not regular members of this and other forums, don't have "backup images" or backups at all other than 50 copies of img01.jpg on their desktops because they accidentally ctrl+dragged instead of ctrl+clicked it.

I've never understood what people mean by this, it takes a littlefair amount of tedious leg work but you can still install win98 updates to this dayhttp://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20042The same is a will be true for XP, there are just no new updates for flaws (with an understandable and understated amount of wiggle room, as seen recently).

I wasn't referring to updates officially released for Win98 my friend, and yes all the official ones can still be downloaded all this time later.
I'll briefly explain what I was doing way back then:
I was grabbing security updates for a newer Windows OS I think perhaps WinMe at the time (some I know was from WinXP), after Microsoft ended support of Win98, and I was installing them in Win98. I even went so far to start making .BAT install scripts for them for my own personal use. Luckily it never wrecked my Win98 installation, some of the stuff I did made that OS more stable than an out-of-box install of the OS. Basically I downloaded the .EXE updates from Microsoft and extracted the files from the installers. I was going to move onto trying to update Internet Explorer as a major challenge, but by then the computer was so old it couldn't run a new Printer/Scanner and some software I needed so I moved onto a new PC with XP Pro.
1. An imaging app, tried & tested. I use Acronis, there is also Macrium, and Image for Windows, maybe others??
Also for freeware disk imaging there's DriveImage XML Private Edition Free. I would've used it but in the end Macrium Reflect is infinitely faster doing the backup, I don't know how they compare doing restoration since Macrium is fast at that too.
A family friend who's into his old PC games, and thinks of himself as a Windows guru didn't have an image backup after he wiped out his XP restore partition (he had no Windows install CD) for more room for more old PC games. Well doing that eventually bit him on the backside over the weekend when something screwed up his XP installation so he ended up buying Win7.
It's rather effortless to make an image backup and store it on DVD(s) for pennies if someone doesn't want to use the hard disk space for it on an older PC with limited hard disk space, and it's just as easy to restore from!
When wants to re-install XP then Microsoft refuses to supply any updates that were released BEFORE april 2014. But there's a program that's able to break that blockade: Tweaking's Windows Repair !!!!
You have to be very careful and pick what updates to let it install though Willy2. For instance in my testing it wants me to install Office 2010 updates, but I have Office 2003. So far the only thing I've let it update is Internet Explorer, and reluctantly the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool which I don't use on my own but I let it run it doing that once-per-month update.
I know. Windows Update keeps nagging me that I should install updates for Office 2010. When I do that Windows Update wants me to install the same updates once again. (I also still use Office 2003). One simply can't tick all boxes and let all updates to be installed.
If you use this, can you still designate an update as hidden? In other words, "Ignore this update" or "Don't show this again" or whtever it says?
Yes.
The only reason I keep getting asked to install Office 2010 updates over Office 2003 is because I wipe out the Software Distribution folder, I have no use for over 100MB in that folder to only update IE and Windows Malicous Softare Removal Tool.
