How Many Legs?

Received this email from a friend where I had to solve a math question and which gave me all sorts of grief, even with a calculator but I got it eventually. :angry:

You may want to try when you have a bit of time.No cheating now! :P

There are 7 girls on a bus

Each girl has 7 backpacks

In each backpack, there are 7 big cats

For every big cat there are 7 little cats

Question: How many legs are there in the bus?

The number of legs is the password to unlock the Excel sheet.

If you open it, add your name and send it on to see who else can unlock it.

10990 legs!!!

7*2 = 14 girls legs 7*7=49 backpacks 49*7=343 big cats * 4 = 1372 big cat legs 343*7 =2401 little cats * 4 = 9604 little cat legs 9604+1372+14 =10990 legs!!!

AJ

1584 legs

(7 x 2) + (7 x 7 x 7 x 4) + (7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 4) = 10,990

10990, as long as we're not counting the driver, driving.gif otherwise 10992.

Dennis..... you have a good point...I wonder...

AJ

I love how you can find anything on the internet --HINT THIS IS THE EXCEL FILE!!!

No driver was included to open the puzzle. :)

Must we count the legs of the seats in the bus too? :huh:

Nope, just the girls and the cats. ;)

I must have mislaid my excel viewer, just had to install it again.

Did I open the file? That would be telling. :)

For some reason this has been doing the rounds on a few forums so I know the answer, disappointingly there's no catch or trick, just standard maths so not sure why it's going round like it is :huh:

Hi JD, I got this excel as an attachment in an email where once you crack the code you can add your name and resend to other friends just to give them the shirts after you tell them your name is entered and how easy it was to work out. ;)

Hmmm...

Girls=2 legs, no.=7 7x2=14 (no. of legs)

Bags=7, 7x7=49

Cat=4 legs, no. 7 big cats per bag 7x49=343 (no. of big cats) 343x4=1372 (no. of legs)

Per big cat=7 small cat, 343 big cats all in all, 343x7=2401 (no. of small cats) 2401x4=9604

Perhaps the answer is from 10990-11000.

Happy now? My left brain is currently melted. I need to take some break from math :blink:

From my first post Tunerz :)
