History content removed - not history map...?

Hi,

This is my first post here. I hope that you can help me with a problem. (sorry about my English)

My computer was full with malware and spyware, i had some registry issues too.

Before I decided to format my pc, i manually moved my user map to the D:/ station because i wanted to save my favourites.

And before i formatted my pc, i run CCleaner first to check if something will change..

Now i saw that my cookies were deleted, but i still saw the map "last week" and "today"

They were empty, but it looked like the content was deleted manually.

I had this discussion with my friend, who believes that I indeed deleted my history manually. But i didn't.

Is it because of the user map being moved?

Can somebody explain this?? I have Vista home with IE7.

Thanks a lot...

map is in the dat files (which requires a restart) :)

hi Nergal, thanks for your reaction.

Does that means that i keep seeing my history maps, because i didn't restart my computer?

Because I did reboot my computer, what explains the history maps, being empty?

Like a mentioned before, I had registry issues. Can it be related to the registry that, maybe is infected?

A lot of questions, I know. But it is still a question mark for me because recording to my friend, the only possible way is because the history is manually deleted. But nobody did.

Hi hope, and welcome to the forum.

Can we clarify what exactly your problem is? Your English is good, but I think your post could be read in different ways.

You moved your browser history (profile?) details onto an external drive or a partition of your drive, to enable you to do a format, and not lose all your history information.

Before you formatted, you realised that your history information was already empty, and your friend thinks they were deleted manually, or maybe when you ran CCleaner.

I might have this completely wrong, but did you actually select the "move" button as opposed to selecting the "copy" button when you transferred your stuff.

The "move" option will do just that. Move your history to the other drive, and leave nothing behind, it will then be blank. The "copy" option would have moved your stuff in the same way, but left the original information behind, and intact.

Have you actually formatted yet? If not you could have your PC checked out by our Spyware Moderators by following the advice given here:

Post back hope, and let me know if I'm reading your problem right.

Hello dennis, thanks for your post.

I had problems with some spyware and pop ups from spybot that my registry was changing

So i moved all my stuff to another partition and in order to keep my favaurites etc. I copied my profile.

I ran CCleaner many times and removed just everything. I checked every detail in the registry section.

Its weird that i could see the history maps in IE7 without content.

I had problems with some spyware and pop ups.....

Hope, apart from your history/profile problem, there's something else you should sort out first.

1: Have you formatted your PC yet?

2: If not, please note that CCleaner does not remove Spyware or any other type of nasties which may be causing you problems.

CCleaner is a cookie/temp file removal program, to remove a buildup of useless files on your PC. The "Issues", or registry clean feature will not remove Spyware from your registry, only remove dead/leftover registry entries.

If you have or had Spyware on your PC it needs to be checked out correctly. This could save you having to format your PC.

You can do that by visiting this link, and following the instructions.

With the language difference, are you understanding the content of these posts hope? If not, please say so, and I'll try to make things more clear if I can.

Once we sort this out, then we can look at other things.

Hello Dennis,

Yes, I do understand all posts, and I do know that CCleaner is not a spyware removal program.

The virus I had was messing with my registry so I ran every detecting, cleaning program I had.

It was not helping, but I really didn't want to format my laptop because of all the software on it, so I waited till the end.

I've reinstalled my computer to de factory defaults with a back-up cd, it is not formatted, but I've a clean system now.

Hi hope.

It's a shame you had to reinstall, but sometimes a clean start is maybe a good idea. I'm sometimes tempted to do it myself, and then install only the programs I think I need.

Have you managed to get your browser profile back in place yet?

Once you're sorted, it's time to think about backing up your data, and get your System Drive backed up in case of any future similar problems.

There are a number of good backup programs you can use, but I'll initially link you to the ones I use myself, and if you want any alternatives, just open a new topic and ask.

Both of these are compatible with Vista.

Karens Replicator: (Freeware)

This is great for making regular backups of your personal data, Music, Photos etc.

Macrium Refelect: (Freeware)

This program will make an "Image" of your entire System (C:) Drive. It has a detailed help file explaining what an Image is, and how to use the software. And there's always plenty of folk on here to help.

Once you have everything installed again, your personal data, all the windows updates, all the programs you want, (and there are lots of free ones available on here), you can then use Macrium to make an Image of your C: Drive. This will be a "snapshot" if you like of your drive at that moment in time.

If you ever have an Operating System failure, or a Drive failure, or something similar to what you've just experienced, then you simply "restore" the Image to your C: Drive, and that gives you back everything as it was at the moment you made the Image. All your data, installed programs etc. etc..

You can save this Image to a Partition, an External Hard Drive, or store it on DVDs.

Hope this helps.
