As I've recently found out there's no real replacement for just having more RAM installed! Although high mem usage can mean there's way too many programs automatically starting with Windows, such as stuff for web browsers, music players, video players, etc., which aren't necessary to always have running until you yourself start them.
a lot of the time application horde memory they don't need (my biggest offender is outlook)
Can you open Task Manager and check the Processes tab to see what's using all that RAM?
