Greener computing

I decided to switch to a greener way of computing.

So, I switched to http://www.blackle.com/ for my homepage.

This Google version takes less energy to backlight, being mostly black, & doesn't spam you with messages to "Upgrade to Chrome!".

Now, lets hear your suggestions for greener computing!

* I had in mind to purchase a quad core netbook & output it to my LCD monitor to replace my desktop PC when I finish compiling all my projects...

I typically skin the websites I visit in black (you may note that winapp2.com itself is black by default). I find it way easier on the eyes and I am aware it saves energy too.

My drives are all 'green,' and spin down after being inactive for a while (annoyingly, one of these is like five minutes)

By the way Winapp, not sure if this is just a tiny mistake, but on the Guide page of the Winapp website, on Step 2, you have it as with quotations rather than without quotations?

Greener computing? ... err ... keep using a computer until it's unrepairable & don't feel you have to update/upgrade whole thing every couple of years ... turn down brightness on lcd/led screens a few notches ... don't leave your computer cluttered with junk files, look after it & it'll last far longer ..............

Saving items with quotes perserves the extension you give to them. It ensures it will save as an ini file and not any other kind of file. (You can also use this to save files with content of a different type, for example, saving a PNG file as a JPEG)

Being serious though when looking about on download sites there's a few "green computing" programs that are supposed to "save you electricity," and "save the planet," yet most user reviews state they're a joke.

That's because green Apples cause a certain ailment. :lol:

A black LCD display consumes an infinitesimal amount of more power when displaying a blackscreen as opposed to a white screen. Unless the backlight is turned off. Which is probably not the case.

I have LED and LCD monitors. I guess LED uses the least energy cos there's no backlight. It runs very cool.

That is incorrect. LED's are the backlight instead of fluorescent tubes.

Thanks for the headsup. I've paid little attention to screens cos they seem to be so simple. I recently saw an LED/LCD combo advertised at BestBuy. Can you explain that configuration?

LED backlight, LCD old-school passive LCD like in watches.

LED denotes the type of backlighting. LCD describes the pixel array. There is nothing revolutionary about these. Just a different style of backlighting.

Kroozer, my understanding is:

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) -> Backlights whole screen

LED (Light Emitting Diode) -> Backlights only the pixels that are in use. Black areas remain unlit. Power savings may be 70% or so.

That's good info Super Fast! So no wonder LED can be cooler. I just wish my LCD HDTV didn't heat up my small audio/video room.
