Anybody have this installed? How big is this program? Google says the min system requirement is 400MB of free disk space and they recommend 2 Gig free disk space.

System requirements for Google Earth on the PC

The Google Earth client requires certain system configurations in order to run smoothly.

Minimum configuration:

  • Operating System: Windows 2000, Windows XP
  • CPU: Pentium 3, 500Mhz - System Memory (RAM): 128MB RAM
  • Hard Disk: 400MB free space
  • Network Speed: 128 Kbits/sec
  • Graphics Card: 3D-capable with 16MB of VRAM
  • Screen: 1024x768, "16-bit High Color" screen

Recommended configuration:

  • System Memory (RAM): 512MB RAM

The download itself is reasonably small, it's space is probably used for the cache as it downloads the maps from the server while you navigate around the globe.

Install and have a play.

Does the program have anything more practical compared to the web-based Google Maps? I don't mean the 3-D rendering of downtown areas and fluffy things like that...I mean better satellite image definition, more current mapping, etc. Thanks.

Google earth isn't really for making maps. Its for seeing 3D sattelite images of things all over the earth.

Its cool to play with every now and then. :D

Anthony, before you download anything have a look at this site.

Flash Earth:

I got rid of google earth, and I use this instead. I found the best one (IMHO) is Microsoft VE Arial, but you have a choice, including Google.

Its cool to play with every now and then. :D

Here Goes:

The Google Earth install takes up 30.3Mb and the separate cache folder (you can choose the location of the cache during install, use custom install) took up 7Mb after zooming into a couple of places around the world and letting if fully load.

One must visit location in google earth is the Grand Canyon... :)

Does CCleaner clean up Google Earth? I can see the cache getting out of hand.

It's listed in my CCleaners Applications tab (If not there by default install the winapp2.ini)
