Gimp flees Sourceforge

Gimp, the popular free photoshop alternative, has decided it can no longer permit itself to be downloaded from SourceForge because of third party bundled ads in the Sourceforge installers

And so begins the exodus, and it is a shame. Sourceforge once had integrity and a stellar reputation. And now we get to witness it's slow deterioration and eventual demise at the hands of it's new owners. In a way it's sad, but that is the way of the world.

will just make FileHippo even more popular.

it's good that they got their own mirrors - wonder why they didn't do that ages ago since their software is so popular.

Popular and free doesn't pay the price of data usage that host your own uses

they found some way to manage it which is good for users.

A rival to SourceForge has been needed for years anyways. Would be nice if allot of the developers just banded together to create their own alternative without all the bundled rubbish - heck even a big already well established download site could host them since they're likely to already have the software available for download.

GitHub is a great alternative.

Thanks for the suggestion. However I personally wouldn't bother using something that requires the installation of a software just to obtain other software they're hosting.

I'm not sure what you're referring to Andavari?

Edit: I think you're confusing GitHub's developer tools with GitHub's software hosting.

You only need the github client if you want to clone a repo (and you don't even need to use Git's, any svn will work)

You can usually download builds directly from a Git - no client needed

I'm looking at a "Join ... " page for Github.

Is it so that after I complete this I can just sign in, or must I install something? Or can I just download from github?

Sorry for the lazy question. Probably everybody else on the planet knows this. :P

Just that these days of I am less and less inclined to tell an email address, and waaay too lazy to set up a fake one for each signup.

The signing up process is for developers who want to create a repository to host their open source project.

Thanks, Shane. :)

Sourceforge response to concerns.

Judging by comments under the response I don't think it worked.

Didn't work at all, they'll have to face the facts they've lost trust.
