SO my first scan turned up "283.7 MB to be removed," then says "Details of files to be deleted (Note: No files have been deleted)"!
Somewhere in the material I read about the program, there was the suggestion that no necessary files are deleted by ccleaner.
How does the program determine that I will not need the files it identifies? Or am I supposed to know what each file is and keep it or ditch it? Or does the program delete only material in those identified files that is problematic?
I'm not good at random deletion of files, which may be part of why there is so much on my machine, although something _is_ adding lots of unwanted (and unidentifiable) bytes over my internet connection sometimes.
I'd love to have those 283.7 mb, but not at the risk of loss of use of some of my functions!
The things that Ccleaner deletes are typically 'junk files' uneeded by your computer. Ccleaner is one of the safest cleaners as it tries not to be too invasive.
It can be quite daunting when looking at what is giong to deleted can't it
Just in case you haven't read the documentation here it is

Perhaps it's best you don't bother with the registry cleaning area just now (issues)
What is your operating system?
Also are are your virus/malware programs up to date and their scans clean?
This first time, it is indeed daunting to view the list! Thanks for referral to documentation. I'll leave registry for later. My operating system is XP Home SP2. Virus Program is AVG Free, and I can't even update it, until I get more space on my disk!! The last update was a month ago. A scan last night on that update came up clean. However, something is downloading data in great gobs, occasionally when I am online. "Hidden virus" sounds like a good candidate, one that AVG is not finding, as this has been going on for several months.
Then you need, as a matter of urgency, to follow as many steps as you can here, and then post any logs you have been able to do in the Spyware Hell part of the forum
