FireFox not spell checking in this Forum

I know this is a known issue.

My post is to get a feel for;

i) how wide spread it is

ii) has anyone resolved it

It seems to only affect FF in combo with this Forum.

The FF spell checker works on other sites.

Looking through past threads, it seems some people have got it to work by adding other language dictionaries, but not all.

For me, I have to start typing, go back and right click on a word, click Languages and select a dictionary, which should be automatically pre-selected.

Mine still comes and goes. I run nightly though so I can't complain.

fair enough, the Nightly builds are only for testing purposes - but it shouldn't "come and go".

have you noticed the Nightly's spell checker working on other sites?

I spent a few hours last night digging around on this problem, on the belief it may be me, or FF, but if it's only in combo with this site, then I'm wasting my time trying to find a solution.

For me it only happens on this site.

That's a good tip to get it to working on here. And yet it's a known issue for this forum, it's no wonder there's so many misspelled words on here if allot of people are using Firefox.

As for the dictionary I wonder if the forum uses English (U.S.) or English (U.K.), so it would be most interesting hearing if any U.K. users also have the spell checking issue on here when using Firefox.

misspelled words on here if allot

Made sense to me. :P

Well, joy of joys - I have a solution.

Don't make me explain how, no idea, but for me it works, and I'm taking that as a win.

So, without changing anything I had already done, languages, locales, dictionaries etc, out of sheer coincidence, I installed the NoScript add-on, rebooted FF like it wanted and POW, spell check in FF on the forum now works. Could have blown me over with a feather.

I had also, a few days ago, installed Ghostery, but still couldn't spell check afterwards, so there should be no correlation there - buy Hey!, what correlation is there with NoScript.

I hope this works for others. (but surely there are those with NoScript that still can't spell check, maybe re-install it, just a guess)

I would hate to have to install an ad-on that wasn't designed for spell checking just to get spell checking working!!!

Opera spell checker (the one I use most) works no problem on this forum, as does IE10 spell checker.

agreed, but I was installing it anyway for its script protection and the spell fix was just an added, unexpected, bloody pleasant bonus.

yeah, i hear ya. i was once an avid Opera user but found it wasn't well supported on a couple of sites I always needed, web bank sites from memory.

but that was years ago and they have probably built a much better version now, but they are changing the engine, which ticks me off.

and in fact, since getting Win8 on this PC, I had gone back to IE and tried v10 for the past 2-3 months and was liking it (and it's spell checker) but I do have a soft spot for FF.

home is where the heart is I guess.

update.

I had to reload the PC due to an Office issue. A complete clean install of the lot.

So I also took the opportunity to further work on this spell check issue in FF on this forum.

Of course, out of the box, it wasn't working.

I loaded Ghostery and this time did not load NoScript (as I never thought there should be a connection with that anyway).

Also installed the English/Australian, English/United States and English languages.

Got the United States English Spellcheker (v7.0.1) dictionary and the British English dictionary (v1.19.1) and the English (Australian) dictionary (v2.1.2) extensions.

Still no luck, rebooted FF and the PC and still nothing.

But after a few reboots (maybe 2 or 3 over the course of a day or two) it just magically started working.

Damned if I know why, I sort of at least know how to get it to work.

Mine still comes and goes  not currently working in the quick reply

The fix listed in this thread seems to work for FF users and IPBoard forums.

thanks for the link Hazel, I had already stumbled upon the same solution in my testing as mentioned in my post #1.

for me that fix had to be re-done every time you went back into FF, but they don't mention that on your linked forum.

so it wasn't the most ideal work-around.
