VHD = Virtual Hard Drive.
I've only ever seen them used by Virtual Machine software, like VMware Player, Oracle VirtualBox and Microsoft Virtual PC to name a few.
I think some backup programs and zip programs may also create VHD files.
Apart from using a virtual machine program to access those files (which are a 'virtual' image of an Operating System), I've used 7-Zip to retrieve files from a VHD image.
You can also mount vhd as a hard drive

Aldo, since you made a VHD in recuva, is it safe to assume you have Recuva Pro? If so, don't forget you have direct to developer priority support so you don't have to rely on the guesswork of us, the userbase
