After I ran CCleaner all the data from my Family Tree Maker 2009 disappeared. I don't want to install my last back up because I'm afraid I'll lose some really recent projects. Please help!
I gather you didn't have a backup of the info?
Was this the first time you had used ccleaner?
Have you tried Recuva?

Yes, I have a back-up, but it is for the whole computer not just for FTM. I don't seem to be able to get just that file off my external hard drive. It seems to be that I have to back up everything to the older date, (which would lose some recent projects) or start over again with FTM. What will Recuva do for me?

"Possibly enable you to recover the deleted data."
The problem is the more you use your computer, browse the web, open programs, etc., it's constantly creating temporary files that write to the hard disk that could potentially be overwriting your deleted data making it completely impossible to recover.
Recuva is available at: http://www.piriform.com/recuva

Did Recuva and you were right. Most of the files had been overwritten. I hadn't discovered this initially since I don't use FTM every day. I did figure out a way to get the back up copy of just that file and I have most of my information back. Lesson learned . . . back up more often. I won't let that happen again.
Nice to hear you have most of your family history back. Things like that are hard to replace.
Sometimes we have to have something like that happen before we make sure our backups are done regular
I can't believe I just did the same thing but it didn't delete my information. My Family Tree program won't find anything when it does a search. I have no idea what type of file I deleted that made that happen. Can someone please help me so I know what to restore with Recuva? Thank you
Hi sniemi, and welcome to Piriform.
The guides for your program should tell you where it saves it's data, and the name of the file extension possibly.
For example Family Tree Maker apparently saves it's files with a .FTW extension.
Before you scan with Recuva, go into "Options" and set up Recuva as per these screenshots:
Then you will be able to search for the files through the same file structure as the one in which they were saved:
Make sure you restore to a different drive if you can (even a thumbdrive) so as to not overwrite files you are looking for.
