Explanation of CCleaner selections

Some CC selections are obvious to me, but may not be to others. There are some that I *think* I understand, but obviously don't.

So how about making it easy for people to find out?

At the bottom of the Cleaner and Registry sections, add a one-liner explanation of what each item means or does. Tell the user, What does this selection do? What are the implications of cleaning this particular item? What can or can't I do afterwards?

Operation: If I click on, say, Temporary Internet Files, then a one-liner description would appear across at the bottom of the screen.

I am suggesting this because after running CC yesterday, it completely scrambled my custom grouping of icons on my desktop: I am a busy user, so I have about 120 icons in all. Now their groupings are lost, and I have to spend time finding which has gone where.

Which item do I have to uncheck to stop this happening? I haven't a clue, and I can't find it in the online help either.

Hope this is helpful.

Welcome to the forum :)

I am a busy user, so I have about 120 icons in all. Now their groupings are lost, and I have to spend time finding which has gone where.

After 7 years my XP has lost the ability to rebuild the icon cache,

so some icons had to be slowly loaded from their applications whilst I went through my email inbox.

After trying many "solutions" I got one that rebuilt the cache,

AND IT ALSO SHUNTED THEM TO THE FAR LEFT.

I had about 90 desktop icons.

The cure was far worse than the problem.

Because I used Regshot when fixing the cache I knew the only significant changes where in thousands of MUI registry keys and values.

Because I had an ERUNT registry backup that was only a few hours old, I restored the backup and all the icons were put back where they belong.

If you still need to fix your groups then you may get them back by restoring any registry backups that could have been made.

Regards

Alan

Like I said, I couldn't find it in the Help Guide, nor does the Search facility find it.

Can anyone give me a simple answer about which item I need to uncheck so that CC doesn't trash my Desktop icon arrangements?

Help!

Welcome to the forum :)

Assuming you haven't selected any option in the "Cleaner" section which has been unchecked by default I think I'd blame it on the Registry Cleaner.

Long answer short, I'd recommend you don't use the Registry Cleaner unless you are certain about what you are fixing and even if you are, always make a backup.
