Domain Question...

I'm thinking about starting up a small side business for computer repair. I want to make business cards and have my e-mail address, contact info, etc on them. I don't really want to go for blah@yahoo.com because it just doesn't seem very professional to me. I was thinking of buying a domain name for my business but not necessarily setting up a website at the moment. I really just want it for an e-mail address right now. Is that feasible? Will I still need to pay for storage space, etc? Any information would be much appreciated :D

Yes, use domain and hosting for just email, website later. Or you could get just email hosting and use a domain you buy.

When you get a domain, get hosting elsewhere and not from a registrar (where you buy a domain).

You could simply put a dummy index.html (.php) page to use, till you decide to startup a site.

Thanks for the sound advice :)

Well I bought my domain... Now I need hosting... Anyone know a good hosting site? I don't need much space and would like to keep cost down ;)

http://www.surpasshosting.com/ (Orlando Florida)

http://www.rochenhost.com/ (Dallas Texas)

http://www.networkredux.com/ (Portland Oregon)

http://www.canvasdreams.com/ (Portland Oregon)

http://www.iinet.com/ (Vancouver Washington)

All (except last one) use cPanel control panel.

It's free, fast and doesn't place any ads on your site.

Capman all I get for that is error...could not connect to remote server.

Really?

I just tried the link again and it works for me.

Works now, they must have been having a cup of tea :)

Thanks for the replies... I went for a smaller hosting company which offers tons of features for a small price. $9.24/yr with a discount.

Good luck, mind me asking who?

The ones I added where ones I used over the years and recommend, my current host is Canvas Dreams, nice to have a local host and quite reliable.

They are called DreamHost.

They are called DreamHost.

I heard of them, but never used them, hope it works out for you.

Thanks! :) I'll let you all know

Try IIS, microsofts version of web server. All you need to do is keep your computer on all the time and have a certain version of an os. (XP PRO, Vista Enterprise, Vista Ultimate, etc.)

I do keep my desktop on 24/7 but I would prefer not to run a web server on it :) Thanks for the suggestion though
