Document files unreadable after being restored.

I'm having a problem with restored document files. My documents (MsWord) show recovered, the file names are intact, but when I attempt to open them in word, word keeps asking me to select the encoding that makes the file readable. Regardless of what I select, the files are unreadable.

I've checked the faq, but didn't see anything related to this :-(

a recovered file is no guarantee that the file is now not corrupted.

numerous factors are involved in file recovery, and in my opinion, a vast amount of luck as well.

factors like the size of the file, FAT versus NTFS, the fragmentation state of the file, disk usage and a bunch of others.

So is there not anything one can do to open their Word files? This makes me feel like Recuva is not worth the $$. I have PDF, Excel etc that I cannot open.

Recuva recovers (copies) whatever is at the clusters at the address held in the file header. Word will attempt to open the file, and if the file isn't in Word format then it will fail.

As Mta said, what is the file system, how long has it been since the file was deleted?
