I ran CCleaner yesterday (under W7x32) and every restore point prior to that moment has disappeared, I haven't been able to determine if the restore point files are actually gone or if only the registry has been altered to make them invisible. However, I haven't been able to replicate this behavior, running CCleaner today (many fewer fixes were made, of course) did not affect the dozen restore points created in the past 24 hours. I saw a thread on this topic from a while ago and the CCleaner folk denied the program would ever remove restore points - has there been any more recent discussion?
The restore points can be removed via the restore point removal panel, but running the disk and registry cleaners shouldn't affect restore points.
@George G: Run (Piriform's) Defraggler (DF) and see how many files DF can find in the folder "c:\system volume information". That's where the System restore points (SRP) are located. Did you run CC with the option "wipe free space" active/ticked ? If so, then you can kiss your SRPs goodbye. Don't worry, you create new SRPs manually.
I've been able to determine that the files representing the missing restore points are actually gone. As for the "wipe free space" option, it appears not to be set by default, and I certainly never chose it. But in any case, why would the disk space occupied by restore points be considered "free space"???

Wipe Free Space fills the empty part of the drive
system restore dump points when space is needed on the drive
I have the same issue - on some day CCleaner stopped recognized restore points even though they are present on the drive.
I did a full app removal and re-installation but it didn't help
Same here on my XP SP3.
Reinstall made no diff.
RPs exist in the System Restore of the Windows application, but the points are failing to load in the UI area in CC.
I will see the loading whirly wheel spin for a nano second but the page remains blank.
(I am NO PC expert so no idea where to look.)
Have recently done some wipe free, but cannot pinpoint how and when that relates to the missing RP event popping up.
Wipe free space fills the free space of the drive (edit: in order to overwrite the files that currently reside in that space)
System restore points are kept until drive space is needed
Windows sees the dwindling hard drive space caused by wiping as a need to free up space
To compensate for the lack of space windows deletes the points (conjecture: before ccleaner arrives at that section)
[From this point forward is conjecture]
Ccleaner sees this as free space and fills it as well
This causes windows to remove more SRP
and onward until there is no more SRPs left
(By the way this is almost step for step my reply 2 posts up, but maybe this time I was more clear?)
What I saw when I first noticed (either just before or just after wiping free space. And mind you here's a spanner-there may have been several points AFTER this wiping, which are now gone??)
So fast fwd a few days and what I now notice, is that there are (EDIT) 6 RPs in Windows System Restore calendar(2 days have multi points) , and yet a blank page in CCleaner.???????????
Are you saying that the the reg entry?? or area which communicates restore point info to CC is missing or corrupt?
It seems to me (a rank novice) to have occurred since I upgraded to the latest free version of CC)
Coincidence.???
Are you thinking the issue will come good (I am not doing any wiping other than my normal CC clean before I log off)
If not for whatever reason the restore point option in ccleaner is now defunct for me.
See that's what you get for posting in someone else's thread instead of starting your own. your issue is different from the one in this OLD threadYour issue is solved via this answer
I had DCOM service turned off which in turn does not supply the system restore points to be observed. As soon as I turned it back on,all of my restore points could be seen.
Sorry,
I did a search here using the 'Missing Restore Points' and found the most appropriate post, of those that popped up(I thought).
(mind you that's after hours of googling and signing up here when I drew a blank)
It's a lottery some forums scream "don't start a new thread,newbie."
(My DCOM is on auto/started)
However you prompted me to visit Services area.My WMI was disabled.Turned it on auto, all good in CC again.
Thanks for your help.
Glad to hear that restore points are visible for you again Pyroformis
Also for posting back what worked for you, now these 2 bits of info (WMI and DCOM services) could help other users.
