Defraggler 2.10 Won't finish / Takes over Windows 7 64 / Hangs / Cant Kill Process /

Hi,

I use Windows 7 64bit. I ran Defraggler the other day and it crashed mid-defragging so i had to shut the computer down manually. iT was time to update anyway so i uninstalled both CCleaner and Defraggler, removed all registry files and updated to 2.10 (latest of both as of 9th Oct'12)

Since then Defraggler won't work at all and crashes at the Building List stage usually at 9%. At that point everything slows down, I Ctrl Alt Del and try to End Process Tree of "Defraggler64.exe" but it never dies. It 'takes control' of my entire laptop, audio starts to stutter and slowdown, Windows Explorer reacts like a snail and my mouse cursor jumps around. The only way to resolve the hanging is to manually restart the pc, upon startup it is lightning quick again. If i don't run Defraggler Windows is fine.

The Same Thing Happens In Safe Mode

I have had all sorts of strange event viewer errors. Here's some just from Defraggler running and then me having to restart manually -

I currently have NO VIRUS' (Although i DID cath the recent Java Update virus floating around - but its gone)

I have C and D partitions, both passed the Chk Dsk and Scannow CMD tests so no problems with Drive errors.

Does anyone know whats going on, could the event viewer errors give a clue?

Many Thanks,

W

It may be a good idea to visit one of the Malware removal forums listed here and make sure you have a clean machine. You may have left over remnants of the virus you had

By the way does the same thing happen if you uninstall Defraggler, create a new user, then try and install and use Defraggler in the new user account?

Thanks for the reply Hazelnut,

Hmm Malware bytes crashed whilst scanning too so I re ran Chk Dsk and It turns out there are some bad sectors on my D partition, could the Defraggler crashing midway through have cause this ? Windows has repaired them so im going to reinstall DF and see if fixed.

Thnx,

W

Are u sure it's "clean"? Sometimes a rootkit such as TDSS can cause extreme slowdowns & program crashes. Not saying that it is, but... it happens!!!

rootkit is probably not a factor to look at yet, imho

Yes, there are a few other things to try, I suppose... :) I'm sleepy at the moment. Night everyone, zZzzzZzzzz!!! haha

Downgrade to the last version of Defraggler that worked for you.

If the old version still works well and the new version still fails, the probability is that the new version is not compatible with your system.

If the old version now fails then something has become broken or corrupted;

possibly by malware or possible the result of bad sectors.

That is all I got :)
