I just tried the new comodo on one of my dekstops. Needless to say I'm not very happy with it at all.

I installed it and everything seemed to be fine, but I left the pc for a while(like 2 hours) and the pc went into hibernate. When I woke the pc up nothing was responsive at all and it even crashed(I haven't had xp crash on me in forever). I rebooted the computer same problems, so I booted into safemode uninstalled comodo and everything was fine.

Then I went to check the security center, and guess what? Comodo was still listed as being on when it was not even installed.

So the installer is broken as well.

Has anyone else had any of these things happen with comodo? I don't care about how to fix it, because I'm probably never going to install it again.

I may take it off the the "recommended" list though if this is something you all have noticed.

I was lucky and made a system restore point before I installed it though, so I didn't get too mad.

But not everyone does this, and I cant tell people something that does this is "recommended".

I have been using it on my desktop for a couple of months and havent had a single problem as of yet. Hated the antivirus though.

Comodo stuck in Security Center and it's FAILURE to uninstall is why I'll never use any of their damned products again, antivirus, firewall, etc.

If you want it out of Security Center I think the solution is rather critical and that is format+reinstall, I spent over a month trying to get rid of the firewall with zero success although I was able to get the antivirus out of Security Center. Note: And this was with a tracked Total Uninstall installation when this happened!

I had a system restore point made litterally 5 minutes before I installed it.

Using that got it out of the security center.

So I'm not the only one with this problem here then.

I think I'm going to just remove it off the list then.

Sir Lagalot : At DSLR : I found the answer! The problem was with Windows Management Instrumentation and the fact that its database was now incorrect. To fix this, I had to (1) stop the WMI Service, (2) delete the "repository" folder in C:\windows\system32\wbem, and (3) start the WMI Service. Starting the service rebuilds the deleted folder and the database. Once I restarted my system, Windows Security Center no longer showed McAfee Firewall as running.

Have been using Comodo since November with zero problems. Could the problem be linked to the possibility that your previous firewall wasn't completely uninstalled?

It's definitely a Comodo problem in itself as their antivirus and firewall software can produce the same effect which is not properly uninstalling. After such behaviour it produces one will find readily that they can't install any new version of Comodo Firewall as it will deem itself already installed, talk about f'd up.

I had ended up making a Comodo antivirus "killer" (.bat and .reg) to remove it from my system but had no such luck in removing the firewalls deep hooks, and I had looked up information all over the place about the issue with no results.

I won't touch it ever again! If you do try it make sure you first create an ERUNT registry backup, and for added paranoia a System Restore point, and then track the installation with ZSoft Uninstaller because without doing so you may not be able to get rid of it!!!

Thanks for posting that. I guess I should have looked on their forum, but I was too pissed off at the time.

Hopefully they will fix their installer soon.

This windows install was only like a month old, and there was no firewall ever installed.

I don't run them on my desktops because of my router, but I wanted to try the new comodo just so I could say I tried it.

I need to start using tools like that.

I used total uninstall(free version) a few times, but I always forget to do it.

Just using system restore fixed the problem for me though. :)

It's called make a desktop icon for it, that way you'll remember it. That's in fact the only way I ever remembered to run it before an install, and the same has extended over into ZSoft Uninstaller.

I installed COMODO firewall a few months ago with ZERO problems but after reading all the negative reports about it I sure hope that I don't encounter any problems with it in the furture. The only reason that I installed it it the first place was because of all the great reviews it was getting.!!!

I'm not promoting Comodo, however, just remember there never seems to be a day that someone isn't posting here because they are having a problem with CCleaner, which is about the safest prog out there. I guess with a gazillion different configurations of PCs there has to be some conflicts.

I just uninstalled Comodo from my desktop. I figure with I have been a bit overkill lately since I have a hardware firewall, so I got rid of that and my cyberhawk.

I also only use the windows firewall on my laptop, along with real time bitdefender protecting it. so far so good. :)

I'm at the point where I'm sick of anti-anything or whatever else people have installed.

All of it slows down your computer(some less than others of course) and most of the time is more annoying than having an infected computer.

I'm not saying that everyone should stop using security programs or run infected computers, but its starting to get rediculous. I see all over the net these security forums where there are 50 million topics with people talking about all of the security programs they have installed. I've seen some where people have like 15 antispyware programs on top of a firewall, AV, and HIPS. All of this garbage just isn't needed.

Windows is never going to be 100% secure, not untill hell freezes over or something.

But, its honestly not difficult to to keep a clean computer either.

When is the last time any of you who consider yourself somewhat knowledgable about computers gotten a virus? The answer is probably that you haven't gotten a real virus or spyware infection in a long time. But then there are still those who barely know how to turn on the computer, and they manage to get computers so infected they wont even boot up. Is this because they didn't have all of the "anti" apps or on their computer or because they just didn't have a clue what they were doing and downloaded lots of junk or didnt keep an updated machine? I'm willing to bet its the second. Is there anything that can really be done to stop people who are computer stupid from getting infected? Sure we can install a bunch of software in hopes that it will keep their computer clean but most of the time it doesn't work. Untill you tell them to uninstall that p2p program, quit clicking those junk emails, and stop downloading adult content then they will always get one infection or another(if you tell them and they still do it, tell them tough luck. If they have to pay for a repair one time I guarantee you they will stop.)

To each his own, but I think its starting to go overboard.

My philosophy that seems to be working fine:

1. Update windows

2. Don't do dumb crap

3. Make sure you at least have the windows firewall on

4. Install Antivir antivirus without realtime scanner, and let it scan overnight once a week.

5. Scan once a week/month with one spyware scanner.(I don't even do this anymore)

Of course I still will go about with business as usual telling people how to "secure their computer", but honestly I'm starting to think its all stupid.

I'm sure there are some of you foaming at the mouth in anger, like I said, to each his own.

This is just my opinion/observation of course. :)

lol! rridgely i couldnt agree more. i still keep a few antispyware installed on the desktop, but other than that just the hardware firewall and antivir-and i dont run anything real time there. i do update windows, and scan my pc about once every couple of weeks for everything-always clean. the only thing i do that is "risky" is i use emule, but have for two years and have never had a problem.

as well, i keep all my files (music, movies, pictures, personal files, etc.) on my external drives and are turned off while downloading and stuff so they are kept clean and away from any infections incase something happens. i even keep all my installers on the externals, so if i have to reinstall windows, i simply drag and drop and install everything-fairly quick and easy and not many problems.

on the laptop i only run the built in windows firewall and defender, and basically the other anti spyware and avast are going to get run every couple of weeks. it just seems to make things so slow, and really, i dont surf porn and such and dont click on things on sites, so i dont get problems.

all the spyware/virus, etc. that i had was when i first got my desktop and i clicked on everything and didnt know what the heck i was doing (its amazing how little i know, and how much ive learned at the same time:))

Sad but true! And in the event of a false positive even the protecting programs can seem viral in behaviour by deleting a perfectly clean file or constantly belching about some infection that doesn't even exist. :rolleyes:

Nothings more annoying when some anti app, including firewalls ask if:

  • Q: "is it ok to run program 1, program 1 is calling upon explorer.exe"

    A: Ah I don't know, this must be your cool HIPS working for me.

  • Q: "program 2 is launching autoupdate.exe is this ok", "is it ok to allow autoupdate.exe to be added into

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache"

    A: Stop interrogating me, I will not conform, I will not comply!

  • or getting repeated prompts of

    Q: "program 3 is infected, it has tape worms".

    A: Isn't that special.

All f'n annoying if you ask me!
