Yes you can, I know because I have done it several times.
What you do need to make sure of though, is that any additional sticks you add are not of a slower speed than the original one, otherwise all the memory will run at the slower speed.
Also, I believe, if you only have one stick at the moment and are adding a higher amount of memory than the original one, then the higher sized one should be placed where the original one is and the original one placed in the next available slot.
(I could be wrong about this last point).
CaPMAN is right. I just have 2 slots in my HP and have a 256 and a 512. If you have a off-the-shelf computer, you can use Crucial Technology's Memory Advisor to find out how much memory your computer can handle.
i heard that the RAM work better if all the clock speed are the same... not very sure...
