Cleaner requires Microsoft Edge WebView Runtime to run, but it is already installed

I can no longer open CCleaner and get the following message:

CCleaner requires Microsoft Edge WebView Runtime to run.
Failed to initialize WebView Runtime (Error: 0x80070002).
To fix this issue:

  1. Install or repair the WebView2 Runtime from the link below
  2. Download WebView2 Runtime
  3. Restart CCleaner.

When I try to install Microsoft Edge WebView2 I get this message:

Installation failed. The Microsoft Edge WebView Runtime is already installed for the system.

I tried all the various options for install Webview Runtime, but I always get the same message.

Hi @msibleyj,
You can download the latest version of WebView2 using the link below:

If you select the Evergreen Bootstrapper and download and install WebView2 this should resolve your issue.

Actually, the only solution was to run the installation exe file as administrator. Otherwise it returned the error message mentioned in my previous post. A rather easy fix, as it turned out.

Glad you were able to resolve your issue

Hi msibleyj:

Just out of curiosity, what is your Windows operating system?

AFAIK the WebView2 Runtime has not been a component of my MS Edge browser since November 2024, and it is now a persistent component of all Win 10 and Win 11 operating systems - see announcement in the 14-Nov-2024 release notes <here> for MS Edge 131.0.2903.48. I assume this was done because many Win 10 and Win 11 users who performed a forced uninstall of MS Edge were damaging other third-party software that still required the WebView2 Runtime to run correctly.

From the MS support article Evergreen vs. Fixed Version of the WebView2 Runtime intended for software developers who distribute third-party software requiring the WebView2 Runtime:

Windows 11 devices and Windows 10 devices

The Evergreen Runtime is preinstalled onto all Windows 11 devices as a part of the Windows 11 operating system. Microsoft installed the WebView2 Runtime to all eligible Windows 10 devices, as described in Delivering Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime to managed Windows 10 devices.

Even if your app uses the Evergreen distribution mode, we recommend that you distribute the WebView2 Runtime, to cover edge cases where the Runtime wasn’t already installed.
