Classic Microsoft - update to fix update errors, causing an update error

Am I the only one that can't install todays Windows update - kb2923545? It's supposed to be a fix for potential update errors yet, ironically, I keep getting an error when trying to install (Win Update gives an 80070643 error code).

Have followed all the suggestions MS gives for that error code HERE, and downloaded the hotfix to install manually, but still no go.

Is it just me? And anyone any other suggestions?

From their page:

The most common cause is a problem with the .NET Framework installed on the computer.

And I wouldn't doubt it, I had to fully remove .NET Framework from my XP SP3 install in order to get a horde of other updates to install. .NET Framework can die!!!

Could be the dreaded .net causing issues. If it is I feel your pain.

I used that .net tool Hazel, it was one of the suggested fixes on the MS site, and did the last suggested step in the MS page of removing all versions of .net and reinstalling, then trying to install the update, didn't work (even tried installing the update with .net removed, just on the off chance it might work)

Try this: Download "Windows Repair" and run it.

There's also a ".Net removal tool" available but I haven't got a clue where to find it. Find it and re-install .net. Or if you don't like .Net then don't re-install it.

Thanks for the suggestion, didn't work. And as already said, used the .net removal tool and tried installing the update without .net installed and after reinstalling. I think the .net think might be a red herring but it seems no one else is having a problem with this update :(

It's here, a last resort though but it did work for me when I was having update issues caused by .NET Framework:

I-I wonder what happens if I run that on Windows 8.. .net clr3 is integrated into the system

From that link I supplied it takes you right into the readme page which claims it will not offer to uninstall a .NET Framework version that's integrated into and is a part of the OS.

Yup, as said, I tried that. I'm just glad it's not a security update or something more important as it seems the update is just gonna have to stay uninstalled

Who knows, maybe Microsoft will release a fix a mere 2 months before they stop supporting your OS. <_< That's in direct reference to the old XP update bug they finally got around to fixing.

JD I forget to get back to you on this one.

I installed that update on my Win7 64 bit machine and it went in no bother.

Sorry :(

Ok, thanks

Same problem here, I've tried just about every solution I could find but nothing works.

Thanks, at least I know it's not JUST me then.

Possibly some update glitch in your OSes, you can only hope Microsoft can fix something on their end if you've both tried everything available to end-users.

There is a Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool, but I have no idea if Microsoft are still maintaining it.

Already suggested, and tried, but thanks for the suggestion.

You aren't the only on having an issue with that update JD.

By the way what did the error code say as the reason for the fail besides giving you the error code?

If you look here there are two listings of your error code plus the different messages and how to fix.

Thanks Hazel. He seems to be having a slightly different problem as his won't download, mine downloads fine but refuses to install (shows how much use those error codes are don't it!). And it gives no more information other than saying installation failed and that error code (the "get help with this error" link doesn't even take you to the right error code help page)

Oh and having not googled for a few days I tried googling the error code and update number - only got my own post
