ok i have a bog standard dvd rom drive and it is died. if i put a game, dvd, audio cd it does nothing. the light flickers on and off for a minute but the computer does not think that there is neting in it. it is a jmls XJ-HD166S. i dont know what to do with it. i have also just updated the firmware/drivers.
Did it stop working before or after you updated the firmware/drivers?
If it stopped before, have you tried a lens cleaner?
Try removing it from device manager and restart the computer, it might reinstall itself and be ok.
It may be time for a new drive though.
I agree alot with CaPMan, excellent advice.
If you consider buy a new one, maybe you should look into one with write capability, I heard they're pretty cheap nowadays...
well i have 2 the other one is a cd writer its just the other one has died
Usually when they die they stay dead no matter what remedy you try, also applying an unofficial firmware that isn't from the drive manufacturer is an easy way to kill a drive.
The thing that killed my beloved and charished Toshiba DVD drive was ripping some 2000 plus audio CD's, it didn't last a year because of that. I miss that drive dearly since it was the best one I ever used for securely ripping audio CD's.
