This has only ever happened with the latest version.
It starts, then is interrupted by opening the browser again. At that point it halts.
Any ideas of how to fix this?

also double check you got the latest version from Piriform or FileHippo.
(I assume pfWWW.dll is some piriform link library, although I couldn't find it on either my Win7 or 8 PC's and a Google search was inconclusive)
Make sure you download the setup to your pc first before installing it.
Don't select to 'run' from the browser

I use AVG, and have always downloaded the full file.
I've tried installing the latest version perhaps a dozen times - using the notification that a new version is available.

You do not need to install CCleaner.
You can download the Portable version which does not depend upon registry access.
If that works then perhaps there is some issue in your registry that is causing installation failure.
I always use portable versions of any software where possible.
