When trying to run CCleaner on my laptop, CCleaner tells me MSFT edge is open and must be closed. After the hourglass for a bit, it tells me it must be forced closed. That would be fine, except I don't use MSFT edge. I checked what programs are running this last time, and no MSFT edge was in use on my computer, yet the warning came up that edge had to be closed. Just to make sure, I uninstalled edge, since I don't use it anyway, and sure enough, ccleaner told me edge was open, and had to be closed, even though it was removed from my computer.
Edge is a system app and you can uninstall it only with "workarounds". Did you really do this?
Apart from this, please check the following:
- Open the "Settings" App.
- Click on "Apps".
- Click on "Default apps".
- Check that Edge is not the "Web browser".
Other Microsoft apps (Skype, Outlook, etc.) use Edge and IE files and storage locations.
(For example- Skype apparently uses Edge or Internet Explorer to present adverts).
So even if you never use Edge or IE then some other app you use, or something Microsoft in the background, may be using their files and storage.
Try doing a CCleaner Analyze, force closing Edge if needed, and then looking at what files CCleaner has found under 'Edge'.
The file/path names it has found may give you a clue as to what is actually using it and so needing to be forced closed.
AP Michael,
Not the problem, edge is not my selected browser, and the edge was available to remove directly from the general apps page, and I removed it.

Bobndc,
It could well be outlook, but could equally be something else.
Give me a shout if you need step by step instructions to do what I said about looking at what files CCleaner is finding.
PS.
Just to point out that what you show in your screenshot is not 'removing' Edge at all.
It is just changing your default browser (the one that opens automatically) to Chrome rather than Edge.
Edge is still there on your system, it's built into Windows and cannot normally be removed/uninstalled.
If you click on 'Apps & features' in that settings screen you will see it still listed under 'Microsoft Edge'.
In fact I can see Edge on the taskbar in your screenshot, it's the leftmost, all blue, 'e' symbol.
(The other 'e' symbol, with a gold band, is Internet Explorer).
Go to Settings..Privacy..Background Apps (on left hand list) and untick Microsoft Edge.
Hazelnut, you had the answer!!!!! Thank you!
