Ccleaner vs opening xcel/adobe files

I hope someone can help me. I noticed yesterday that I cannot open some excel / adobe files after running the Ccleaner the day before. This has happened about a month ago and I didn't put the two together. Now I am sure. I run windows XP with office 2007 on a 1.8 dual core laptop with 1G ram. Nothing spectacular and all was fine until I ran Ccleaner and then tried to access my files. Luckily I had cut most to cd a short time previously so recovering was easy, I was able to get the rest off my outlook. Great product but now I am fearfull of using it. I have noticed if I move the mouse pointer over the file name in explorer then the 'Date last modified" changes to today - without even opening the file, nor clicking on it. For excel - it tels me ' Excel cannot open the file 'XXX.xlxs' beacuase the file format or extension is not valid. Verify that the file is not cofrupt and that the file ext matches the format of the file.'

Any help/pointers would be nice.

Hi ian, and welcome to Piriform.

There's information here which may be of some help:

I'm wondering if you have "Hide extensions for known File types" checked. Open any Windows Explorer window, and go to "Tools\Folder Options\View\Hide extensions for known File types".

If it's checked, uncheck it, and you can then see if the file you refer to has the right file extension attached to it, as these things can change for one reason or another.
