Surprised no-one seems to have raised this, but any version of CCleaner past version 3.0.0.1310 corrupts the User Temporary Files Folder and User Temp Folder when deleting the I.E. Temporary Internet Files and Cookies.
That is to say, the Temporary files folder becomes corrupt and the User Temp Folder creates Folders with index.dat files by the name of: Temporary Internet Files, Cookies and History which remain locked until reboot or various other methods.
It is less noticeable with W7, but easily seen with XP.
Again, version 3.0.0.1310 does not have this issue and I have tried many different PC's, O.S.'s (mine and others), I.E. versions etc with the same result. I rarely use I.E. and the issue is eliminated by un-checking the relevant boxes in CCleaner for I.E., but that's not really the point.
I also cannot recreate this on any computer XP-Through-win732bit
however I think you speak of ie cache corruption (something that happens with all third party cleaners) the non-reboot fix for this is to delete browing history from within internet explorer
Thanks for the replies. I've already tried many fixes without success however. Strange, since it doesn't happen with version 3.0.0.1310, but does with versions thereafter.
Also, I've recreated this on other computers with XP through to W7x64. It's a little harder to see with W7 unless you bypass the security in Documents and Settings to see the corruption.
As I wrote, the only way to prevent it so far is unchecking 'Temporary Internet Files' and Cookies for I.E.
I also can't recreate the issue and I'm using XP Pro. Although I've seen in the past during my Win98 days when Internet Explorer would mysteriously move it's own data folders for Temporary Internet Files - which can be easily re-configured in Internet Options to use the correct location.
have you remapped the locations of ie temp files? Or anything else? Also your reply didn't answer the question of what you are having corrupted & what you mean by corrupted. Describe exactly what the issue is, because nobody else seems to be experiencing this issue in the same way you are. Also I don't want this to go down the wrong route in us thinking you mean something & really you mean something else.
You need to be specific.
one thing to note: ccleaner doesn't ever (except wipe free space) create any files, so I'm perplexed by
creates Folders with index.dat files by the name of: Temporary Internet Files, Cookies and History which remain locked until reboot or various other methods.
EDIT: I think I've an idea; alternately turn off protected mode (on all zones except restricted) & privacIE (one at a time), browse a bit, & run a clean to see if the “corruption” still occurs.
Ok, sorry for the delay; I'm working on other PC's atm. So, when this occurs, remapping is required either manually and logging off/on or automatically after a restart. I don't remap the default location to begin with though. I do use the minimum cache in I.E. and use 'check for newer versions of stored pages' 'every visit to the page' for better security than the default 'automatically', but I don't think that's the problem as I've tried both.
To be clear, when the corruption occurs, the shortcut of Internet Options I have on my desktop under 'General, Settings' changes font to look something like short DOS rather than the full path in normal font. This is consistent with the creation of a Temporary Internet Folder, History Folder and Cookies Folder in the Temp folder. These new Folders have corresponding index.dat files and sub-folders. I can't be any clearer without a screenshot.
The other night I installed the latest CCleaner version 3.13.1600 and the same thing happened. I tried a number of variations including using the .ini or default settings, but again, the difference that mattered was whether or not I.E. Temporary Internet Files and I.E. Cookies were checked (no issue when unchecked, but no clearing of Temporary Internet Files).
I uninstalled and returned to version 3.0.0.1310 and the problem is no longer there.
The only thing of note was when I used the latest version, the issue was not created if I already had the Internet Options shortcut open before running CCleaner. I am yet to try your suggestion Nergal. I will have to re-install the newer program etc to see.
So I tried version 3.14.1616 and the same issue was present.
Interestingly, I tried Nergal's suggestion and it initially worked. However, when I checked 'Temporary Files', the same issue returned.
Thereafter, I tried many variations, but the corruption occurred intermittently with no precise, eliminating workaround.
In the end, I went back to version 300.1310 and everything works correctly.
I've read this is a problem unrelated to CCleaner, but AGAIN, the older version does not carry this issue and this has been consistent with several other PC's/O.S.'s.
The closest I have come to a solution is Nergal's suggestion which I assume would have to do with reconfiguring I.E., but would like to know more as I'm keen to resolve this for myself and for others who may or (in many cases) may not realize the issue exists.
Yes, but it occurs on a freshly formatted/installed O.S. anyway, so that shouldn't/doesn't matter. Thanks all the same.
I really believe this happens far more frequently than ppl realize, esp on W7, since the relevant Documents and Settings sub-files are inaccessible without using a security over-ride process...
Thanks for the replies so far. My settings are supposed to inform me when there is a response, but that hasn't worked at this stage.
The issue seems to be un-noticed for good reason. It doesn't occur with Windows 7 SP1 64bit. It has occurred on other O.S.'s and remains an issue with XP, but I'm guessing most people no longer use that O.S. I like to use both and would like an answer for XP 32bit, but understand if that isn't forthcoming.
Cannot find anything in windows explorer that looks unusual.
Cookies, history, temporary internet files, index.dat all seem to have been removed normally when running CCleaner.
C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Local Settings\Temp folder has a normal looking number of (normally locked) .tmp files, like ~DFA09.tmp, etc.
If you'll give the file path to your questionable files, I'll see if i have anything like'em on here. Am not entirely sure what I should be looking for.
Interestingly, I tried Nergal's suggestion and it initially worked. However, when I checked 'Temporary Files', the same issue returned.
uncheck temporary internet files or run the delete internet history everytime, if (again you've not particularly answered) this is the iecache corruption I spoke of it seems to strike nearly at random, and I get it from time to time (using any cleaner of temp internet explorer files)
Sorry for the delay in replying. I'm still not getting any email updates on replies and haven't been using XP Pro for a while as my I'm rebuilding that desktop.
Thanks Nergal. I have tried every measure including your suggestions and it does seem to have to do with the cache corruption. I don't remap the location of i.e. temp files, but when this issue occurs, remapping is required either manually and logging off/on or automatically after a reboot. Again, I only use I.E. 6 with XP as 7 onwards seems to interfere with program install/uninstalls and I prefer Firefox.
That said, the same corruption: creation of files/folders in the Temp Folder has occurred on other O.S. including W7 and Vista. Worth noting (again) is that this occurs only after version 3.0.0.1310. This version and any previous versions do not corrupt the I.E. cache.
That is to say, the Temporary files folder becomes corrupt i.e. the Documents and Settings/User/Local/Temp Folder creates Folders (with corresponding index.dat files) by the name of: Temporary Internet Files, Cookies and History which remain locked until reboot or remapping and logging off/on.
