I have CCleaner Professional installed. When I run the Software Updater it seems to reach halfway, but then just hangs…sometimes for hours. Once I started it in the morning & then when I returned to my computer the evening, the progress bar was still only halfway. What could be causing this? on the side it shows 6 programs require to be updated.
Is it hanging when scanning for updates, or when actually trying to update something?
The second one is more common, for wxample if an update is asking for a mouse click, or your software registration number, or anything else that CCleaner can’t give it.
Personally I never let CCleaner try to update anything, if I do look at it then I see what it says has an update available and then go to that application or it’s website to check and do the update myself if wanted.
Plus of course Windows automatically takes care of any Windows updates that it needs, so I definitely wouldn’t let CCleaner try to do any of those. I don’t see why it even offers them.
(OK there might be a slight use for that if someone has turned Windows updates off; but if they have done that then it’s because they don’t want them).
Thank you for your response. I appreciate the feedback.
So it seems to be hanging while trying to update something/ an application (It’s a pity one can’t upload a screen shot here).
It shows:
Updating software
to
Not Started
(progress bar - halfway)
(Cancel button)
“Please don’t turn off your PC or disconnect from the internet”
The other thing is that I can’t check which programs/ applications it has identified to be updated because on the side it just shows a number.
I’m starting to wonder what the use of CCleaner is anymore…
OK I would be careful here in case it’s trying to do the optional Windows Cumulative Update Preview.
(Which will actually become the monthly Patch Tuesday Windows Cumulative Update tomorrow evening).
I’m guessing that it may well be trying to do that one, and that it’s getting stuck when Windows is asking for permission to do a restart as part of the update.
What you could do is go to Settings > Windows Updates and if the Preview is showing for you then download and install it. This is Win 11 but there will be a similar one in Win 10.
It’s a bit of a waste of time because as I said Windows will do it again tomorrow evening or Wednesday when it becomes no longer a ‘Preview’ and gets the latest security updates added.
If It isn’t there then I would do a Restart (not Shutdown) of your machine anyway, that should clear things up and complete any stuck Windows updates.
(Yes, I know it says not to but sometimes you have to anyway or you’ll be sat looking at that message forever, and Windows is quite resilient to it these days).
The alternative is to wait until Windows does the monthly Patch Tuesday update tomorrow evening or Wednesday, that will do a Restart as part of the process.
PS. New members can now post images, the forum admin changed it the other day so that new users can now post one image per post.
So I’ll also tweak your settings to allow you to add more than one image per post.
Thank you for the detailed explanation. I will review things again at the end of the week and revert back accordingly.
